need to know if a 1996 P-reg A6 1.8SE (1.8 20V 4 cylinder engine) has a cambelt or not, the owners service handbook is worded very badly so that it is unclear which types of engine have cambelts?
Yes it does... at the front of the engine as you look at it, behind the cover. For info, practically ALL cars have a cambelt... some just have a chain but for the most part they all have belts.
The Audi twin cam engines actually have both, one belt that is driven by the crank and drives one of the camshafts via a pulley and then also a chain which connects the two cams together at the opposite end (under the rocker cover) to save timing them both.
For all engine and parts info you could also try looking here for reference in the future... http://www.vagcat.com/
