ipod adapter fault?

I've got an 08 S3 (pre facelift) with a concert 3 stereo and factory fitted ipod adapter. when I plug an ipod in nothing happens, and if I select it with the cd button is says cdc not connected.
I have tried a 3rd gen classic, a mini and a touch ipod, but none work.
anyone else had this fault? is it more likely to be the adapter or the headunit at fault?

Well there re 2 paths as options,1st test with another audi ipod unit or it may just be, as known before, the ipod charging etc pins aren't matching up with the different ipods over release periods.

Latter is cheaper as you can purchase the adapter cables on ebay for pounds.
