Afternoon, just looking for some advice re a car that I haven't had for long, and took a punt on as worst case scenario (which this may be :) I am happy to break)

Issues identified so far are:

  • All four driveshaft gaiters need renewing
  • Seal at rear of gearbox needs replacing
  • Suspect turbo blowing oil
  • Previous owner bypassed suspension compressor ( I kid you know) and now uses a 12v compressor to to inflate suspension
  • Requires at at best a new compressor
  • Rear passenger side bag has a leak
Everything else on the car works, I also have a parts car available ( A6 Quattro 2.5tdi with a dropped valve)

So...What are your thoughts? Anyone had these repairs done ( they seem pretty common) and independent Audi specialist that you would recommend near Huntingdon?

Be honest! I'm leaning towards breaking but would prefer not to.

Thanks

Paul

All comes down to the need for the vehicle and the cost of replacement.
So I would say if you need the 'big' car with all weather capability its a keeper.
Otherwise balance cost of replacement (knowing that unless you buy new or nearly new it could be the same bills).
Also are the big bills done (cambelt, front suspension arms and bushes)?

All four driveshaft gaiters need renewing - So that's about £20 a wheel parts. Easy for a garage mine (2WD) took some 'encouragement'
Seal at rear of gearbox needs replacing - Unless its 'flowing out' some weeping is acceptable and I am always surprised just how little is actually lost.
Suspect turbo blowing oil - £325 for a recon from Midland Turbo.
Previous owner bypassed suspension compressor ( I kid you know) and now uses a 12v compressor to inflate suspension
Requires at at best a new compressor - Lots of fixes on various forums but I liked this one.....

Repair kits are around £25 on ebay.
Pattern Pump around £250

Rear passenger side bag has a leak - Pattern parts around £150

Suppose it really comes down to who does the work....
If your not up for DIY then.....
adamss24 on this forum is highly rated or APS Brackley much loved by us with old TT's

Thanks for the reply.

I've just got rid of a 3yr old Merc as I no longer want to have a huge amount of money caught up in a car.

Cambelt was done 32k ago so will be due soon. Suspension arms and bushes look good. Was fully serviced until 159k then neglected since then.

I run my own business so financially it makes sense (within) reason to find a good value independent while I carry on working if that makes sense...that said the more I think about it the more I feel a may have ago myself.

Apologies for typo's in orginal post..not sure what happened there.

I'll go order Andy's recon kit and take it from there.

Thanks

Paul

Quick couple of questions.

Air distribution /valve block next to compressor under car: Where would I get the fittings to secure hoses to this?

Gaiters: Anyone used the split gaiters that you fit without pulling everything apart? I have heard mixed reports.

Thanks

Paul

Split gaiters on mine lasted shorter time then they took to fit....mind you that was the 'universal type'.

Clip part numbers are

4B0616741
4B0616741A
4B0616741C

Other than that a couple of 5mm x 200mm wire ties

Thanks for your help with this...yep looks like split gaiters are a daft idea!

I'll go order some clips, thanks for those codes, really appreciate it.

Thanks

Paul

I have some of the original fixings for compressor and brass nipples for the valve block if you require them.
I have changed mine to stainless push fit fittings like the newest cars come with as I feel they are pretty old now and there are better things out there.
The rebuild kits are straight forward and Andy is a great guy to help you out. I did rebuild one and dried the stuff in the drier out too as there was water running out of it when dismantled.
I can't recommend Adamss24 enough he's been brilliant the times I've been to see him, I live in Plymouth and he is a 5+ hour drive from me but I would still go there every time!

Thanks Chris, thats really kind of you. I may well take you up on that.

I've dropped Adam a pm ans I think that may be the way forward to be honest. The previous owner has cut a few pipes so not sure what goes where currently.

I received a rebuild kit from Andy yesterday and took a look at the compressor, the cylinder bore seems to be coated in silicone...I'm guessing another bodge effort.

The car is parked at work so I'll have another go tomorrow :)

Thanks

Paul

What did you pay for the car? This would be the main determining factor for me and overall condition of the rest of the car. Sounds like £1000 to £1500 with the right man behind the spanners!

On rethink, based on the car being a 2.7 and triptronic I'm going to change my vote to scrap!

Pretty good condition and good history until the last 40k.

Funnily enough I'm on the cusp of keeping now.

I'm into it for £1000 and have spent £185 on suspension /valve block (solenoid?) and rebuild kit. I have the gaiters in the boot so could end up with a "nice" estate for less than £1500.

I've been quoted 350 for cambelt and pump that I would put on any older car I purchased anyway.

That said....may change my mind tomorrow lol.

Woop woop...its alive

Mate with a lift helped me out. Compressor replaced for minimal money, one (very bad) gaiter sorted.

Othet gaiters will be done in time, turbos will be sourced as cheaply as poss and leaky waterpump will changed in next month or so

Thanks for all your help and advice

Paul
