Need some expert interpretation - turbo!

Hi I have a 2006 A3 8P 2.0tdi BKD engine which I have just replaced the turbo with a recon unit as the old one snapped the main shaft in 2!

Now I'm getting no power at low revs, only getting power above around 3000rpm. It's going into limp mode and throwing the light on, getting mostly:

16683: boost pressure regulation: control range not reached P0299

And sometimes:

16618: boost pressure regulation: limit exceeded (overboost condition) : P0234

I have vcds and have cycled the n75 actuator and visually confirmed its moving its full travel. I have checked the vac lines and can see no problems.

My next thought was the MAP sensor, maybe got clogged up with oil when the turbo went? see graph below of Engine measure block 10. As you can see atmospheric and actual pressures are within range. The graph is of the vehicle being driven hard (as you can see 100% accelerator)

Do those readings look OK? if it's not the map sensor then im out of ideas, so would appreciate yours!

Same symptoms here after new turbo but not going into limp mode just no boost below 3k.
 
Possibly must adjust your vanes rod length/stop screw.
 
Is this something I can do at home. Have no vagcom, could I adjust a trim at a time until it feels right?
 
What does the screw do? I Sort of understand what the rod does. I need to lengthen it from what I can work out but not sure what the screw does.

keram - I highly doubt its anything to do with that as I only changed the turbo core, so the actuator and vanes/manifold etc is the original and so it was never adjusted. The stop screw was set exactly as the old one was

I just need to know what/how to check to get this sorted as its reallyyyyy annoying!
 
Here is my log from a quick run. Im not sure how best to upload it here, below is a copy and paste from notepad, not sure if you can make it out. Basically it shows about a 5 second delay from the call for full boost untill it finally gets there!

Looking at that log you can see that the actual boost doesn't catch up with the specified till around 3300 RPM. This is indicative of either a VNT issue or a boost leak. If you are sure all the boost hoses are leak free then you need to check the VNT part of the turbo.
Does the actuator move freely on the turbo, when you rev the car at standstill you should be able to see it move.
was the actuator set up correctly if the turbo has been reconditioned. Connect a pipe to the actuator and try sucking on it, there may be a hole in the diaphragm so any amount of vacuum won't cause the VNT to move.

Here is a video of the turbo on my old PD130 passat. When the engine is first started the VNT should pull in straight away to give maximum boost at low RPM.

Hi Karl, I have already checked the actuator with vcds. I could see it moving its full travel when it was cycled. The boost however would only change 10mbar between off and full duty cycle!

Am I right in thinking if it was leaking boost then the reading would never get to the full 2500mbar? Which it does
 
Depends on how big the boost leak is, At high RPM the turbo may be able to produce sufficient air to supply the engine and the boost leak.
You should check the boost pipes and joints and intercooler thoroughly looking for wet oil patches to make sure that it's air tight.
This might explain why the first turbo failed.
 
What's the best way to check for a boost leak?
 
My bet is on the recon turbo not being setup properly

There is an adjustment screw which controls the VNT mechanism. This probably needs tweaking

I had the same problem on my old MK4. It would only make 5psi of boost until 2000rpm then go flat out!!

EDIT - even though you only replaced the core it will still need adjusting to allow for the new parts

When I replaced the turbo on my MK4 the guy who fitted it set everything up as my old one and yet it still wasn't right

These turbos need setting up preciesly and there are only a handful of companies who have the correct equipment to do this otherwise people like yourself have to mess around to get it to work
 
I have tried adjusting the stop screw from fully in to fully out and everywhere in between and it made no difference at all!

I think it's just bolloxed!
