Hi everyone.

I've recently order my new a3 sportback and is due for delivery in around a month. I contacted the dealer a couple of days ago to make a small alteration the the spec. I actually want to add something and so they would get more money from me but claim it's too late as the build slot is confirmed. I don't see why this should be an issue and it is only a small alteration.

Can anyone help? Thanks

This is quite normal. Once the factory has fixed the build date no changes can be made to the specification. All the items to produce you car will have been ordered so that they are in stock when the production line comes to build it and it's all a fully computerised system that gets the various parts for your particular car to the right place on the assembly line as it's required. Each car is an individual and is made to a specific order which is why the spec can only be amended up to a certain point. After that it's fixed otherwise there would be total mayhem.

Ye makes sense I suppose. It's just a shame as the delivery came forward by a month meaning it was then too late.

All I wanted to add were the roof rails. I was on the fence at the time of order. But I really think they just finish off the car nicely. Any idea if these can be added later on?

If you were to add these professionally by a specialist they would have to pull out the roof trim to expose the bare metal, drill holds into the shell to allow the pivots to fit the roof rails securely. And then put all of it back :)

And no Audi will not fit these on for you because its a service they offer.

When I bought my S3 SB, I too didn't order the roof rails, and asked the same question of my dealer. Yes they said, if you want it done, we believe we can do it for you, but it won't be cheap - but they were prepared to do it - although as Schizophonic says, it means ripping out the roof of the car to do it. Decided in the end not to have it done, it was only ever for "in case" I wanted to fit a roof rack, which is not at all often, so bought a roof rack for my wife's A1 instead. From memory it was about £200 for the roof rails "plus fitting" - hmmm.!!!

In all honesty now, I prefer mine without the roof rails, and don't regret not getting them fitted.

From previous buying experience I assumed that once that order was submitted and in the system the spec couldn't be changed... however after posting on here about some items I wished I had ordered, was told to just ask if they could be added! My car ordered end of August still doesn't have a confirmed build date (unconfirmed wk44) so was lucky to be able to amend the order. Unfortunately I can see the reason that once that date is set, the wheels are motion and all parts sourced.

Personally the roof rails made me think it looked more like an estate than hatch so put me off having them.

BTW.. not sure what model you have ordered but have you asked if its going to have SAT NAV fitted as standard?

Thanks for the replies guys.

I went for the technology package so it has the upgraded sat nav and slightly larger screen. I may ask if the roof rails can been added. It's more for aesthetics than anything.

I think it's been mentioned on here also, that if it was a real big issue for you, and your present car wasn't a crazy spec, you may be able to ask the dealer to cancel the order and reorder what you want - although you will be back into the queue...... They'd just stick your car on the forecourt......

Some apparently are happy to do this, and I imagine that sales aren't that great these days, so at least it would give them something to occupy themselves.....

Roof Rails and Privacy Glass.... two agonising options for any SB owner :)

I wouldn't want any one drilling holes in my roof after paint, you would lose the e.coat and potentially suffer corrosion problems in the future.
As far as I'm aware In the factory the holes are put in before the gazillion stage paint process.

But I'm sure the dealer could add them, though I'm uncertain if there's any under roof stiffening.

I know I haven't got any privacy glass at the moment either. Although I think I actually prefer the look of it without. I will be popping in to my dealer this afternoon to discuss it.

So after discussing with my dealer. The roof rails can't be added aftermarket due to the whole drilling holes in your roof thing.

They are willing to honour the reduced price of the technology package. However I'm still debating cancelling and reordering the car. Or at least asking if it's possible. I just want to be 100% happy with the car.

Tech pack is awesome IMO! Only had mine a week but that is my fav bit. Also make sure you spec AAS as a minimum

Audi sound system. I didn't spec and audio upgrade and massively regret it.

Ah I see. Ye I didn't spec that either. Anyone here ever cancelled and reordered? I was trying to keep the cost down but am now worried I won't be 100% happy

There are some in here who have cancelled their order completely and got full deposit back.

Most dealers will initially just say "it's fine" as long as you order something else from them using the deposit.....

(In my limited experience anyway)

Give it a go, you've nothing to lose - well apart from 12 weeks waiting....!
