Vw Touran intermittent rear speakers

My wife's car is having a few issue with the speakers in the rear doors. We've had the car a few months, and had no problems so far. Until that is the rear speakers starting messing about by either not playing sound or crackling. I'm not sure what I should look at first. The stereo seems ok still, so I guess I've gotta take the door panel off and have a look. But what to look for past loose connections I'm not sure.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Check the wiring between the B pillars are the door itself, pull back the sheathing and make sure the cables are not damaged or breaking up
