I have an Audi 100 Avant Quattro, 1984 with the 2.2. Not had it long, we are using it for this www.teamrado.net !
Anyway after a long run to Newquay and back the car starting making a wurring noise, doesn't sound like a wheel bearing drone, not the brakes as it doesn't change pitch when you apply them. The noise changes with the speed of the car, can't really hear it above 40mph, but think that is due to other noises drowning it out. My gut feeling is that its the rear diff, maybe lost its oil slowly and is now moaning. Any ideas?
