Hi everyone,
It's my first post here (go easy!), as I've recently bought a 2010 Audi A4 S-Line Limited Edition 1.8 TFSI (120PS) which I am in love with, here it is next to my mate's B8.5 S4 Avant:
Firstly, I'd just like to say this is my first german car and I ****** love it. Initial plans are for 15% window tints at the back, remap ~200bhp, then I'm going to leave it fairly standard after that (although I'm tempted to lower it 20mm).
Now onto the bit where I'm worrying a little. I picked the car up last week from a small dealer in Pontefract and my friend in his S4 convoyed home with me on an hour's journey. He mentioned on the way home (we were chatting on hands-free) that when I put my foot down to overtake there was a little smoke coming from the exhaust. We both agreed it was probably because it had been sat a while and not had a good run out. It was only a little bit and I couldn't see it in my rear-view mirror.
I took the car out the next day and came up to some traffic lights alongside a friend of mine (who incidentally owns a lovely SQ5), and he opened his window commenting how nice my car was. When i next saw the guy on Monday he pulled me aside and told me he saw smoke coming from my exhaust when I set off from said lights, and it looked like a faint tint of blue. This is where I begin to worry, the tailpipes I have noticed are also black with soot.
I took it in to my local mechanic (who is very good) and asked him to give the car a full service (which I had planned upon buying the car), but first said can he take a good look at the turbo before he does anything. He called me later and said they took off the pipes and there was a tiny bit of oil in there, but this is normal for turbo cars even though in theory there should be none, most have a little residue. I said does he think there's anything to worry about and he said "honestly, if you hadn't said anything about the smoke I would have never thought there's a problem with this car".
While that's quite reassuring, I'm still worried. The last thing I want to do is be slapped with a grand bill for a new turbo when I've just spent £11k on a car. It's something I can't really afford to be chucking around right now. As per consumer rights, I get a month's warranty with the car dealer, so if something's wrong I need to know very soon as I'm 5 days in. The dealer is about 1 hour 10 mins away so I need to be sure before going there with the car and leaving it with them.
Before I investigate any further, do you guys have any suggestions as to what else it might be? Do the 1.8TFSI's suffer the same oil consumption problem as the 2.0TFSI? Any help is greatly appreciated!
TL;DR: Bought an A4 last week, it's showing small signs of smoke when I put my foot down, only a tiny amount of oil found in intercooler pipes suggests nothing wrong. Still worried and need it sorting within 30 days warranty.
