Big turbo

Am looking to go big turbo in new year on my s3.
Aiming for 400-450bhp. Which turbo would you suggest?

Garrett gt30 or gt35 (500 bhp+)seems to be the way to go

So same size turbine on both... Larger comp wheel, where the exducer diameter is the 71 or 76 "bit" of the name

Billet 3076 version I use is larger, billet comp wheel.. 59mm inducer, 78mm exducer (from memory)


I see now garrett are pushing their "gen2" models...

Proven more than anything...

Borg Warner EFR's on paper look good but doesn't appear to be many 1.8t's running them vs Garrett...

You could argue a turbo is a turbo but they really aren't and some suit some engines better than others... if you can find decent info on either being run on a 1.8t then all good but its a bit thin on the ground and you can't really compare using a turbo brand on a Evo for example to a 2ltr stroker 1.8t...

yea, thats some huge claim mind you.

when you look at the respective shaft speeds of the Gen2 & normal GT its not surprising why their peak flow figures are what they are..... 110,000rpm on GT and 145,000rpm on Gen2... working them a lot harder... Pro-rata I wonder how they compare in reality

Maybe even look at a JP turbo.
Im currently running a B480x on my S3 that easily achieves 300wkw.Pretty decent turbo in terms of quality I wont lie

the B550x basically Gt30 equivalent is what I would go for.
at the end its all personal preference.

Ceramic balls... ohhh errr... £743 excluding hotside which you can get from Snailturbo etc

If I was to do mine again, I'd probably be looking at EFR or Xona. Xona is basically FP. They had a sale on recently. EFR has been yielding good results for guys in the US. Worth asking in here:

Yeah they're long but I think there's some with EWG vband housings that are similar size to a Garrett. The IWG housings are long.
