Min Oil warning light

Driving my 16 plate 2.0tdi 184 and the min oil light came on. Car has done 9000 miles, Is this common and what's the best oil to top it up with until I get it in for a service.

I've never needed to top up between services (oil level always hovers just below the max) in almost 50k miles. Obvious question but have you actually checked it on the dipstick to confirm it actually is low rather than just a sensor issue?.

Checked the dipstick and it does seem to be low, now booked in for service on Tuesday at local VAG specialist.
