Whine and Over revving when accelerating

I have a 57 plate 1.8 petrol Audi A3. My car began to over rev last week and I orginallly thought it was the clutch as it has done 76,000 miles. However, whilst still over revving there is a high pitch whine when accelerating in second and third gear. The whine goes when in neutral. Anyone got any ideas?

Drive up a hill, as steep as you can find, if it is the clutch the revs will go very high but not your actual speed. If no hills test it stationary with the handbrake hard on, the engine should stall if the clutch is good and you are trying to move off.
