What are the symptoms of a stretched timing chain on these engines?

Started to notice some very bumpy idling with odd noises today to the point where it almost chokes on idle if you run it for more than 15 seconds. Gonna have to check it out tommorow and Im hoping its just a bad ignition coil or something cheap...

Anyone had any experience with this?

never really associated the chain with the idling as such, coil pack replacement sorted that, but typical symptoms are a noisy engine (akin to diesel) or oil pressure warning light, as a result of the tensioners (thats when its pretty much needs doing asap).Paid ~£700ish parts & labour from a specialist.

I sure hope so. I was told a while back that it usually starts with erratic idling but I hope not. Just took a look and there seems to be an oil leak behind the timing cover which has popped up in the last 1500km(900 miles) which is pretty worrying :frown: Also the engine seems to be shuddering a lot
even tho its running at a stable rpm:blink: I dont like where this is going at all but I hope that the idle problem is just coils and not related to the oil leak..
Just hit 90k miles on the car too

Unsure about the idling, I'm speaking from personal experiences. Mine happened at 70ishk so yours has held up pretty well.

Definitely worth checking the coils though, around £30 each from ECP.

Slack timing chains (stretched chain or failing tensioner) are generally noisier on a hot engine and at idle. As said above, they sound like a diesel. Apart from some small Vauxhall engines which had poor quality chains, the issue is more often a tensioner and/or guide issue.

i had lumpy idle on cold a while back, it turned out to be my inlet manifold flaps. had to change the manifold.

So I took a look and it had 3 random faults having to do with fuel pressure and idle speed, checked for misfires and found out that sylinder 2 was misfiring every now and then.
Replaced the coil and checked all plugs(which were fine except the no.2 was clean) and this didn't help at all. Now I checked the faults again and this popped up which seems like it might actually make sense. Tried to do the basic settings on the intake manifold runner control but that did nothing aswell so Im guessing its done.
Anyone had any similar experiences or know a possible part number for it?

Had to change the whole manifold? How much was it?

that is exactly what my fault was, i made the mistake of going to audi and they charged me for a whole new manifold which was 1000 with fitting.
unsure of the runner flap on its own

So after a day of digging around the engine bay and checking everything I could think of I managed to find the problem. Ended up being a much simpler fault than I thought it would be so plenty of time spent looking at the wrong places of course,

A leaking PCV valve/oil separator.
The tube coming from the pcv ends up pretty close to the intake of the sylinder #2 so that would explain the misfires it had since its getting too much air and choking.
£50(+£35 for the coil that wasn't needed) spent on a new valve and its running great again :welcoming:

unsure of the runner flap on its own
I called audi about that since I thought that might be it and apparently sometimes the sensor(+-£70) in the intake goes bad and changing that fixes it however it still requires removing the intake manifold to get a hold of the screws I think. If the actual intake manifold runner is broken then the whole manifold has to be replaced apparently. Mixed info on that since I've heard otherwise from other sources but possible I guess.

For anyone in the future who might be having these problems, the fault codes I got were:

004506 - Fuel Pressure sensor (G247)
P119A - Malfunction

001287 - Idle Control System RPM
P0507 - Higher than Expected

0126000 - Intake Manifold Runner Control
P3138 - Regulation deviation

Also a clip of the bad idle:
