Mmi working but no sound

I cheated and sold the car to buy an A6 C5 with Bose. Old school audi quality and sound!

Same problem with sound. It started with little cracking noises, first occasionally, but then one day there was no sound anymore.
I do a little research and high propably an amp is broken.
If you have any good electronic in your city you can take unit into him and he should fix it.

He have to improve soldering on integrated circuits (chips) in the amp, which is located on the right side of the unit under the radiator with fan.
If this does not help, then he need to replace the chips with new ones.
There are 2 NXP integrated circuits in my unit:
TDF8597TH / N1 - hard to buy 1 pcs in Poland
TDF8530TH / N1

In my case, fixing soldering helps just for a moment, so i have to buy a new chips.
I also read that N1 was replaced with N2. I can't buy N1 so bought N2, currently my unit is under repair so i wait for effects.
Cheers Jackq, I'm having a dispute with Audi UK at the moment, so have to take and pay for a diagnostic to the Birmingham garage first. Hopefully they'll conclude it's the 5F unit fast, and I can get Audi UK to do something about it (as it's a common problem!)

My amplifier board in my MMI HIGH has gone, sourced used MMI unit one from the US for £160. Can anybody in Scotland/Glasgow remove component protection & do a region change? Probably need a software update as well. As Jackq said it’s the flimsy NXP chips, mines taken a few capacitors with it as well

@Jackq , were you able to confirm after changing the chips it worked?
@Cooz92 , did you manage to get the board changed at all?

I'm awaiting a case I have raised with the motor ombudsman, but I feel like I might have to sort this myself. I found a supplier for the NXP chips for a tenner, but no one to fit it for me.

Some specialist confirmed that MIB1 have knowing problem with amplifier, in my case too.
Chips was changed a couple months ago and unit working well all the time.
I regret that I didn't buy mib2 before "retrofitting".

Chips need to be replaced using hot air station, everything need to be done perfect, also the thermal grease should be replaced.

Cheers @Jackq , I'll see if I can find someone to replace the chips for both. The thermal grease I can sort myself which is good. Do you know if the unit still gets hot after about 30 mins? You can check this out without removing it and just sticking you hand on it in the glove box.... mine does which is crap!

Do you think the MIB2 will work in an audi with an MIB1? I was considering purchasing one to use with mine but I wasn't sure it'd work with the screen and controls..

Before I sadly got rid of my A3 saloon (2014) with the Audi Sound System, I had the MIB unit repaired at Revtronic Bradford (https://www.revtronic.com/product/audi-a3-8v-a4-harman-mib-no-sound-cutting-out/), I'm not endorsed by them in any way but I disconnected the unit, sent it away and had it back working in less than a week. If anyone needs more information on removing the unit please let me know. For anyone who gets theirs working again, I'd highly recommend finding a way of getting more air into the unit, the chips that fail have a big heatsink and fan over them but essentially no fresh, cool air to pull in, the fan holes just go straight into the side of the MIB unit holder and the chips eventually cook themselves. If I was keeping my car I would've cut a hole in the holder in the glove box where the fan is so that it has a better chance of keeping cool.

@hopgop1 , I don't suppose you know what those guys did? I was wondering if they replaced the chips that @Jackq mentioned. If they did, I'd be tempted to send it to them, keep the car for 10 months with it's warranty and sell it on after. I'm not sure if I'm confident enough to cut away the space!

Just as an update, my complaint to the motor ombudsman went no where after months of waiting. Due to it being out of warranty, they cannot do anything. To all owners, if you have a car in warranty and you start to hear a "hissing" noise in the speakers (like when an old radio signal is weak and you hear noise), then go back to the audi dealer and make sure your unit/amp is replaced!!!!

I'll now look to open my unit up to see if I can sort it myself, otherwise it'll go to someone on eBay to fix for me.

So, my saga has resorted me into buying another unit... had the chips replaced, then the whole amp board.. still no sound :(

Hopefully the replacement unit on eBay will work!

I can confirm a replacement unit was the way to go. I've spent £500, plug and play from VAGTEC and it worked a treat, and got lifetime map updates too!

@Jackq, my repair guy replaced the chips, then the whole amp board, then another chip on the main board and it didn't work. Hope yours is still working well!

I did discover something with my new unit, so...

if your unit warms up in the middle of it quickly and gets very hot.... it's probably not the audio chips that are the problem as my replacement unit stays cool!

Sorry to revive this old thread but desperate for some help!

car was in for service, MOT and fault diagnosis on the no radio sound, Bluetooth sound cutting out and telephone calls/nav cutting out

result of the diagnosis is a bill for 4K to replace the 5f module! Nearly passed out and obviously said no

does anyone know someone who specialises in fixing this type of issue that I can speak to

Hi Paul,

As @Jacq mentioned, its most likely a fault with the amp in the unit. Did you experience some noise in the speakers prior to this? I got Bose Sound Experts to try repair mine, but after replacing the board it didn't work. I did notice that after 30 mins it heated up loads in the middle of the unit when it was plugged in which suggested it was something else other than the audio. I was going to open it up to see what goes on as I bought a replacement unit on eBay.

There is a place in bradford that repairs them that I've seen a few people use. I even phoned them up, but because it was attempted for repair by Bose in scotland, they wouldn't try it, but heard a lot of people try there. Check the thread, I think someone has posted, otherwise PM me and i'll find the place. It was £325 repair. I spent £500 in the end in a replacement unit that now works, slight problem of them enabling the sub volume on it when I don't have one (so sound is not heavy on base as I have no sub) and the nav doesn't remember favourites, otherwise it works fine and never overheats!)

For the most part it’s faster and more simple just to find a like for like used unit on eBay or alike and have it installed via someone like myself. I do around 3 of these a week.

Hi Guys, hope your well. Sorry to bring up an old thread, I’m doing some digging on here as I’ve experienced the same issue over the weekend. Wondered if @DJAlix or anybody could help? No sound, MMI works fine. Thanks in advance

FYI it’s a Audi S3 pre facelift with standard sound system/Tech pack

i had this issue in my A4 avant, i thought the MMI was working but some functionality wasn't (adjusting bass and treble for example) - i sent my head unit to SVT in Scotland they are bose and audi specialists, they replaced the blown board in the head unit and updated the firmware and mapping for a very good price and shipped it all back to me - now working great. Worth contacting them potentially

Hi Paul, thanks for the message. I’ll have a look and see if I can adjust the above too... can you send me a link to them please mate can’t find them on google?
Was it just plug and play once you got it back? No coding etc?

Also thought I better mention as I’ve seen it above too... or on another similar post. The headlight HID bulb went on Saturday and then today I’ve experienced lose of sound... are they some how linked l... It seems very convenient both have gone almost in sync? Audi quoted £200 for the bulb found the same Philips D3S for £64 online...

Experience, the guys at Bose Repair Experts (BRE) are great (google them, based in Edinburgh). My HID Bulb went, I changed that over myself (with my brothers help, was a pain) and afterwards the MMI went. BRE attempted to fix it by changing one small thing on the amp board, then the whole amp itself but it didn't fix it (I still have the unit here), so they had to give up. Mine 100% gets hot in the middle of the unit (not via the amp) so I feel it's something else. There are some people (oem_parts_specialist) that do repairs too from eBay, might be worth a visit as that's specifically for the MMI repair rather than a specific amp one via BRE.

In the end, I purchased a pre-coded unit from eBay, (£475) which works fine. It has a lot of things unlocked and updated and works fine. It is unlocked however to have the SubWoofer & Centre connected (which DJAlix quoted me to fit this) which is a bit of a downside as the 8 speaker system has no base now. I'm pondering on the speakers upgrade though once lockdown is over and get him to fit it for me (£250), although I am pondering on selling the car as I've had a bad experience my A3! Something to ponder come August time really...

The thing to note on my replacement unit though, it does not get hot at all. Maybe due to the extra speakers not being on there? My old serial number had C at the end, this new one has J, so maybe it's an iteration that doesn't have that problem...

That's them - http://www.boserepairexperts.co.uk/

they did all the coding, basically my MMI unit had a major malfunction so a new motherboard later and a bill under 500 beer tokens and i was all good, they currently have my tuner as that too is not working, so they are fixing it - mines a 13 plate A4 black edition so has the bose system, amp, jukebox etc

Thank you guys, sorry for the delay. I’ve contacted the Bose guys and will be getting send off. Thanks again

Hi Guys, sum total of my knowledge on this subject but I thought that I would share, when people lose all sound but say PDC system still works, the PDC has its own speakers, one behind glove box (front) and one in the back passenger pillar (rear) which are independent

Thanks for the heads up Potterswheel.
Just to update - I haven’t had the chance to take the mmi and send off yet. However over the last few weeks the sound has come back periodically... like Potterswheel mentioned sometimes just from the front speaker and then sometimes full sound like normal... from all speakers and then majority of the time nothing. Would this still suggest the amp in the MMI? I will send off in the coming weeks and report back.

If you are in, around or can get to north London I can assist with the replacement.
Where are you located? I’m having the same issue with my 2014 A3. Audi quoted me 3 components and £5K (not an option). I’m a couple hours from London, but travel there frequently and need help!
