Help understanding a couple of symptoms

Wondering if you can help diagnose a problem/point me in the right direction.

Recently I've noticed a couple of issues with my B6 A4 1.8T (190ps) which may/may not be related:

My engine has started making a whining noise upon start up, it's idling slightly higher than usual too (1200RPM rather than ~800) - this stops after a few minutes and the car idles normally. I've narrowed this down to a potential secondary air pump issue but as yet I've been unable to have a proper look/scan for fault codes.

Today, when coasting up to a roundabout in 3rd, I went to put the power down and nothing, pedal to the floor 3 or 4 times (with no engine noise) before eventually it came back to life.

I've noticed this problem a couple of times over the last week, usually when accelerating in lower gears. On the whole she's driving normally but I'd like to know what I'm potentially looking at.

As I say, I've been unable to scan but I've asked around for anyone in the Nottingham area with a VAGCOM/VCDS, failing that I'll buy a lead & have a look myself.

Update for JP's issue, we scanned his car, cleared all faults and then we took it for a spirited drive and then did a second scan. No persistent engine faults logged, so I guess he'll have to see how it drives for the moment, the car drove smoothly with no hesitation at all during our tests.

So we'll have to see if the car hesitates again and if the faults below re-occur. Thermostat might be on it's way out, would be worth observing if the needle on the temp gauge on the instrument cluster sometimes drops down even when the car is warmed up. The throttle control fault could be to do with a loose or perished hose going to the throttle body, so it's worth inspecting that area.

Does the car idle okay once warmed up? I was thinking about the PCV valve, this causes problems with the fuelling.
The whining noise is usually the SAIP pump failing due to water ingress, rpm will be approx 1200 for around a minute or two, this is the SAIP system and is for warming the cat up quickly to clean up cold start emissions. It pumps filtered air into the exhaust manifold to heat up the cat really quickly.

Car idles fine after about 5-10 mins (depending on how cold it is/long it's been sat) - I think you're right, the SAIP is probably the culprit, do you think it's worth replacing/repairing that first & then changing the PCV valve if no change?

Edit: As a point of note, I did a run to Southampton & back over the weekend (350 mile round trip) & there was no re-occurrence of the loss in power mentioned previously.

As others have said the initial noise is the SAI (secondary air intake) pump.. It pumps air into the cat to clear it from carbon. When it's on its way out it whines and sounds bad.

Second issue is most definitely pcv related.. If you've never replaced the valve that's under/beside the coolant tank then it will only help.. I forked out for the 034 one but the oem one is fine.
