Morning gents,

The clutch appears to be on its way out on my 2002 S3 8l. Symptoms include:
  • Clutch pedal getting stuck half way down after changing gears.
  • Slipping in 3rd and 4th gear when accelerating.
  • Small fluid leak from bottom front of car.
The car is on it’s original clutch, dual mass flywheel and clutch master and slave cylinders. It has around 107k on the clock.

I'm looking to replace the clutch, master and slave cylinders, dual mass flywheel.

I've contacted a number of independent garages in my area for a parts and labour quote.

The first quote I received was approx £1600. 10 hours labour £650 and £650 worth of parts.

I was expecting to spend somewhere around £1000 - £1200.

Anyone out there has this type of work done on their car recently?

How much did it set you back?

Cheers.

10 hrs to change a clutch?
What do they want to do? Take the engine out?
Job takes 4/6 hrs max for a qualified mechanic. Sound to me they just want to rip you off. £1600 is laughable
£250-£300 for labour is about right at the top price you want to pay, and parts...well that depends on what stage it is but £600 sounds about right for OEM flywheel and stock clutch, ect.

I've got a single mass flywheel and Kevlar clutch for sale if you're wanting to upgrade. Collection only from Derby though.

Cheers Andrew,

As I understand it, the job would involve a full front suspension subframe drop, gearbox out, remove and replace clutch/DMF/master + slave cylinders, realign suspension and renew fluids.

This sounds labour intensive to me however, from what I've read, 10 hours seems way too much. Was expecting around 5 - 7 hours.

Anyone know / can recommend independant Audi specialist around Staines / South West London area?

Thanks for the offer Jonny,

I'm looking to use OEM/LUK parts + Derby is a fair trek for me.

Cheers

What price so people can offer?

I wouldn't bother changing the clutch master cylinder. There's probably nothing wrong with it. The problem may be just the slave cylinder leaking fluid and this has got on the clutch plate. This would make the clutch slip. Air in the system means the clutch pedal gets stuck down.
Depending on the state of tune of the car depends on what clutch is required.
You can get an LUK or Sachs Repset from CP4L for around £170 that's pressure plate, clutch plate and slave cylinder and the DMF is either 300 - 400 depending on the chassis number.
The first post said 650 for labour and 650 for parts with a total of 1600 . 650 + 650 = 1300 .

Does a single mass flywheel not make it a rough gear change in the car?
not exactly but does tend to make the gearboxes chatter on idle... something to do with the mainshaft bearings... DMF is meant to absorb engine fluctuations making everything smoother... SMF will transmit that to the box and noise can increase as a result

Honestly, no, only thing was some chatter when it got hot when you're idling. I didn't notice it otherwise. Revved a lot quicker, gear change is exactly the same.

Nice one desertstorm,

Apologies, I neglected to state that the first quote I received was ex VAT. They estimated approx £1600 all in.

I spoke with another garage this morning and they also recomended that the clutch master cylinder be left alone. They also quoted £1600 with 8 - 10 hours of labour. Another garage also quoted 10 hours labour but no price without an inspection.

I guess that, without an inspection, it's difficult to know for sure what work / replacement parts are required. From what I've read though, due to the amount of labour required, most folk are having the clutch and DMF replaced even if it's just the slave cylinder that's at fault.

My car had a Stage 1 Revo remap applied and Miltek CAT back exhaust fitted around 8 - 10 years ago. Other than that, it's stock. I've owned it for 13 years, I'm the second owner, and don't tend to rag it about that much.

Most other posts I've read say that a LUK or Sachs clutch can handle this tune.

Would you agree? Any preference between the two?

Cheers

If you are taking the box off to change the slave cylinder on a car with as many miles as yours has it would be daft not to change the clutch. The DMF is a pricey part and some people may choose not to change it as it may look OK. If the car is on a stage 1 tune then a standard clutch is fine. I don't think there is much in it between Sachs and LUK.

£600 is a decent price for a clutch fitted.

You'd be a madman not to replace the slave cylinder whilst its in bits.

£1600 is completely ripping the ****.

How can I change a slave cylinder on a 5speed 02j...
