Buying a new car can be an exercise in frustration and guess work, but Audi is looking to simplify things by showing you your car before it’s ever made and it involves the futuristic technology of virtual reality.

Through the use of Occulus Rift headsets, visitors to European dealerships can configure their car and sit in it before it’s ever made. And if there’s anything they don’t like, they can change it.

“With this, we are taking the next step in our strategy to combine digital innovation with the strengths of the bricks-and-mortar dealership,” said Nils Wollny, head of customer experience. “It offers our customers more information and certainty when making their purchasing decision, as well as a special excitement factor.”

The tech is available at dealerships in Germany, the UK, and Spain and the headsets will make their way around the world.

With VR, customers can explore every angle of the car, from every seat, and be sure they’re getting exactly what they want. But the tricks don’t end there.

Audi also wants to give its customers the powers of Superman, by allowing them to see through the car. With x-ray vision, VR users can see through the cockpit into the engine bay to see all the behind-the-scenes automotive tech that will propel them in enormous speed and sumptuous luxury down the road.

And, if you have a couple of spare moments, you can even see cars that aren’t your own, like the R18 LMS during a pit stop.
