Gears difficult to engage.

As the title really 1st 2nd and reverse are difficult to engage doesn't matter if warm or cold they require a good bit of force to put it in gear.

If you put it into gear and keep the clutch pressed in and take it out of gear it will go back into gear smoothly but if you release the clutch between taking it out of gear and putting it back in it will require force to put it back in?

What's the most likely of causes, Gear linkages or something? Or could it be as simple as an oil change.

What car is it you have???
I’ve got an A4 3.0tdi struggled for 1st 2nd and sometimes reverse it turned out to be N/S engine mount u/s you could see where the fluid had leaked out

Gearbox oil, worn syncros, gearbox or engine mount, take your pick.

Does it do it when trying to engage the gears with the engine off as well?
