So after having the car a whole week it failed to start and needed towing to my local Audi specialist (in Burwell if anyone knows it). They have diagnosed it as both the hpfp and the lift pump.

Parts are going to be just under 600 total and labour was estimated at 4 hours. Seems on the high side for time. Anyone had this done or know rough pricing.

Ultimately I don't much choice unless i pay to have it towed back to my house and DIY it. But would be useful to know

I don't know what the lift pump is but the HPFP is very easy to change. Takes about an hour to do realistically. The lift pump might take longer but as I said I don't recognize that part name.

sorry - guess it would really be be the low pressure pump at the tank. And I should probably have mentioned it is a 2.0 TDI (140)

the low pressure pump in the tank should take no more than 30 minutes to change, even it you take a 10 minute tea break

Just wondering....have they opened up the HPFP? If they remove it and find metal shavings you'll also be having to clear out ALL the fuel lines. Normally when a HPFP fails and leaves metal shavings in the lines Audi replace more or less the entire fuel system inc injectors, lines, etc, etc because if metal gets into an injector then it's had it.

Obviously that is the "by the book" way and you might be fine. If there are no metal shavings, all good, if there are then you will need to clear out all the lines with air / fresh fuel and have the injectors cleaned / flow tested to ensure they are working properly.

There is good info on the HPFP failure in this video and you can see the metal shavings I am talking about around the 3:20 mark

thanks for the info. i got the call today to say its up and running. final bill of just over £1400.

this does include finding out why it had no electrical power - turns out there was water in the cooling fan relay causing it to run at random times.

i am going to collect tomorrow and will be 'discussing' the total amount. briefly on the phone he said it is parts plus 8 hours labour...5 of which are for the fueling issue (changing both pumps, filter, clearing out the lines/tank etc) which i cant believe and 3 to change the fan relay. not sure how much of this is investigation though.

needless to say i am ****** off at the very least to be paying out £1400 on a car i have owned a couple of weeks and now terrified something else will go wrong like injectors
