how does the haldex work

this has proberbly been asked a fair few times but i was wondering how it works. i think i have a problem with mine as the car wheelspins a lot more than when i got it. it is a 1999 standered s3 and is not fitted with traction control. i am a mechanic so i have mechanical knowledge but was wondering how i could test to see if it works

find some grass to test if your getting drive from the rear. the haldex cuts in and send power to the rears if there is differance in rotation between the front and rear axle. ie fronts wheels are spinning
