Recently the pipe to the EGR valve split. The mechanic didn’t find the exact same part, but modified a similar EGR valve to make it fit. My MPG sits around 40, a lot lower than expected for usual longer journeys (1.9 TDI E). I also get the dpf light coming on about once a month. Is new fitted EGR a possible reason for these?

Confused ? . Firstly u say mechanic modified a similar EGR valve then it seems your saying New Egr valve fitted
So what is it old / new

He modified a similar EGR valve and put it in. So when I said a new EGR valve, I meant the one that was modified and put in.

Before mechanic played with the car did you have this problem or is it after the modified EGR was put it.
Could get car scanned with vcd's to see if error codes appear or replace EGR with a new 1 ( come time u will have to replace ) .
Could be engine running to lean
