good evening ladies and gents,
Just about to commit to buying an S5 V6t on just over 80000. Got a good deal on it. Just wondering how reliable these engines are.
Hi jdp, thanks for welcome!! Always wanted one of these, it’s ibis white with the Le Mans 20” alloys. Will get picks up soon. New to Audi, have modified others, STI/ST Etc. Does the price sound ok ?
What about timing chain issues ? Is this a potential major issue?
It is or can be however, it appears you are going for warranty, which I believe would cover it.
Quite a few videos on YouTube on possible symptoms and fixes including cost to replace.

Well as many on here know I have a cynical tendency so I'd like to know what gearbox version the replacement was! If you can get a VCDS scan it would be great.
Waterpump, 'stat and PCV have been mentioned. Timing chains are an issue but don't worry about that until you get that cold rattling - there are plenty of audio clips on the web you can use for comparison. But I have yet to read about actual chain slip (other than one case which seems to have been due to the tech ****ing up the chain fix) so you might even be able to live with the rattle if its not too bad.
The part that hasn't been mentioned yet is the crank pulley. Enough have failed to know its a potential problem, but not enough to get a good picture of when it might fail. But I have read reports of failure at less than 85K. It's a 2-part pulley glued to a polymer damper. This polymer degrades over time. If the belts don't run true then you risk bearing wear - the most expensive being the charger, but it can fail completely - and obviously a lump of spinning metal at the front of the engine can cause collateral damage, e.g. to the rad. As a minimum shine a strong light down to the pulley with the engine idling and check for any signs of 'wobble'. But really it has to be considered a service item and at 85K I'd consider getting it replaced along with the belts. Of course there are plenty of larger ones it can be replaced with but that's a subject for those without warranty...
EDIT: What are the terms of the warranty? They are never fully comprehensive are they? The problem with the darn OE crank pulley is that the failure mode is clearly 'wear and tear'!
Hi Dippy, thanks for the info. So I haven’t mentioned yet that the last 8000 or so miles the car was owned by a gentleman on here. In that time he has posted that it was taken from his drive but was only driven 15 miles which he varifies by the distance from where it was taken and the petrol used. This car is not logged anywhere (hpi etc.) as stolen I suppose because he got it back relatively straight away with no damage etc. He also says he had the crankshaft pulley issue, this seems to have resulted in the belts snapping. He posted that he replaced these.
I used this info to broker the years warranty, top dollar on my trade in and several items done to the car before I buy from the stealer.. sorry dealer. Now before he owned it 8000 odd miles ago it was full Audi servicing + the new gearbox by Audi (need to check which one, cheers Dippy). I suppose there are two ways of looking at this info, but at least I know it’s history right ?
As long as the required work is carried out and you have receipts as an evidence you should be good to go mate. Keep the chain rattle in mind, you can also call Audi to confirm the mech unit fitted to the car in case you don't have VCDS.
Pick up the car, go straight Stage 2 and never look back

If the charger pulley snaps then the car will still run but with reduce power. If the aux pulley snaps then without the alternator charging the battery the engine will have a reduced running time, without the coolant pump turning the engine will start to overheat, and off course there's the loss of power steering and AC. I'm not sure if it will actually cause limp mode...

Just would like say Gents, thanks for your help and advice, going to to take the plunge and purchase the S5. Looking forward to participating in the group and look forward to hearing that supercharger wine and getting to stage II !
All the best with the purchase mate and do make a build thread for your mods

Has it cost you more than the purchase price in upgrades yet? You’re lucky, I bought my car 13th August and haven’t driven it yet.
Straight to the retrofitters for extensive upgrades.
There's no way you have a CREC-engined S5 for £5ish K... Or are you referring to OEM + non OEM when you said not far off...No, but not far off.
Probably about £4K so far with about £500 left to go.
Ha ha that’s the plan !!
Haven’t got any receipts for the pulleys and belts unfortunately just this guy CharlieSaudi saying he’s changed them. I was thinking of direct messaging him and asking him what he’s carried out, can’t find how to DM on this site though.
I have spoke to all the Audi garages that have worked on the car and it’s definitely had a new gearbox at 67000, just need to confirm which. This was done in 2015.
Out of interest, how much is it to replace the belts and pulleys? And by them actually snapping and goin into limp mode, could this cause many other issues? Dippy mentioned bearings.
Hi Charle, thanks for coming back! I have bought the motor, love it I see there is an induction hose on it. Is there anything you have done ?
Charlie
Lol that explains a lot!!
Thanks, I noticed you posted worries of engine noise, anything come of that? I have just gave the car back to the dealer due to a knocking coming when you change direction, he thinks it’s due to bushes or anti-roll bar. Was the gear box mapped.
Thanks for your input I appreciate it.
Yeah the engine noise was just me being me lol apparently it's normal being of the high pressure fuel injectors so nothing to worry about there.
Oh really I didn't have any issues with that, hopefully just something simple for you mate.
Nothing done with gearbox I wanted to see how just the mapped felt first but was definitely on the list to do.
Hope your enjoying it as much as I did.
