Sorry if been covered, I've had a good search and nothing concrete.

Got a 2012 s3 2.0 tfsi.

Only just got it, flicked through the service history and can't see anything of a change. Noticed the service book says 114k for the toothed belt. Nothing for cambelt, I've had previous Audi's and they have been chain. So how do I find out? An internet search gives you every answer possible. Don't worry I'm a chain/toothed belt Isnt Cambelt/it has cambelt and chain/only had cambelt.

How do I find out exactly what my car has or can someone give me the correct answer? Is there a tell tale sign from looking at engine? I've seen some saying where dipstick is can tell you if a chain or belt.

Cars six years old and on 90k, so I'm a bit twitchy as I'm used to be being 5 years / 60k. Mine may of been done but can't find paper work.

Was going to go down garage I got it from tomorrow to have a chat, but figured I'd ask here first.

Did you not check the service history off this car before parting with your money , plus have you not got a warranty even if it's only 3/6 months

Take a look at the Preventative Maintenance post on the main page. The S3 has both a cam belt and a cam chain - looking at the engine, the cam belt is on the left and the cam chain on the right. If you're unsure of the history then get them both changed but you won't see much change from £800.

When doing the cam belt make sure that water pump it changed at the same time.

Thanks for the fantastic and information packed reply. Yes I did check the history. Hence the 'I flicked through it and didn't see anything'. I mean if I didn't check I wouldn't of said that would I?! I also bought it from a garage I trust and know the garage personally where it's got all its stamps from, so I have no issue with that, the book service history from audi says 114k for the toothed belt. The only belt mentioned. Hence why I've just had a search now and asked the question. Previous cars audi have said not to worry about the chain or changing it.

I do have a warranty with the car. But before going down and saying hey this should of had this done I thought id have a little look into it myself first, I could of gone down and kicked off and then found out actually this has a chain and it doesn't need doing.

Sam, I'm not unsure of the history. I've got it, it's got full history. I was unsure if the car had a belt or chain as I couldn't find the correct answer, just different people saying different things.

I think the chain is meant to last the life of the car, but there are some out there that have suffered a stretched chain, and this is usually apparent by a rattling noise coming from that area.
With Cambelts, I always treat them with caution. Ruber perishes over time, so even if it hasn't done many miles it could still snap.
Personally, I would look to get it changed as it will need it at some point, better to do it early and forget about it than have it in the back of your mind each time you drive it.
For reference, I had mine changed by a Vag specialist for £380 for Belt and pump. Not as much as I expected.

Yeah I'm on with a quote at the minute to my mates garage and getting a quote then going to go down to garage I got car from with service history and have a chat. I'm not fussed on price, when it needs doing it needs doing. My issue was that a search just threw up all different answers, I couldn't go to a garage to moan about something that I don't even about.

Thanks, Dave

I had my chain done and tensioner. Bought the car back in March. Paper work said that the water pump and cambelt was done at 60K. Defo worth getting the chain done as well. Car has done 68k on a 2011 plate. Have a chat with *** online on Facebook. They do genuine parts at a good price from Seat. Guy is called mike

Yeah I'll get a price for chain too. Mates garage is a vag specialist so will just leave it in their hands

Now here lies my worry , firstly you said the car came from a garage you trust so why did you find it awkward to just ask garage if car had belt or chain or both , plus if my mate was ( as u say ) a Vag specialist why did he not just tell what the car had and advised you on the matter . I rest my case

At that mileage unless it has rubbish oil you will not need to change the cam chain. People normally only have that changed when it starts rattling. The cam chain is located at the end of the engine above the gearbox. The cambelt is also known as the toothed belt and needs changing every 5 years or 60k miles which ever comes first. that is at the end of the engine near the coolant reservoir. Use genuine parts only. As mentioned earlier, get the water pump done.

Can you open your case and let me know what garage is open at 2249, please?

Quote me where I said it was awkward? You have just made that up. I do trust the garage. I'll refer back to the time in the evening it was, unfortunately the garage I trust isn't open at that time, so I couldn't ask, I also couldn't ask my mate as I say, who owns a VAG specialist, because again if was still 2249. You are lucky guy if yours is open then. What's the name of this garage? I could use them for my queries next time.

Why exactly have you come in this thread though? I've come on to try get a bit of info from helpful people on here so I'm more clued up on what's required or not required and you have added Abosultely nothing, no help, or do you get your kicks trying to be awkward on the internet? I do appreciate your worries and I do hope that case isn't too heavy for you.

Anyway back to the helpful people in here got a price from mates place and it's decent, boss wasn't in the place I bought car from, explained to other lads and they were sound, said go back tomorrow when he's in and he will sort it out.

Prt, thanks for that, it's always had best oil, can see every service it's had and what's been added each time, so not worried with that. Garage I used only uses genuine parts. Not the cheapest but all genuine and good lads.

To be honest mate it's not to heavy for me , I' m no the Numpty here , and if you thought ( which you did ) I was aving a go at you ( by mentioning looking at your service book ) you have a lot to learn and if that upset u enough to post back your sarcastic comment again Ur a Numpty. Plus I am sure you mentioned reading between your post you didn't want to go to garage like a bull in a China shop ( feeling akward ) again a Numpty if that's the attitude you would have taken . Now again I rest my case .
But if you do want the last word please post .NUMPTY

You OK mate? You seem a little grouchy, maybe tired? Has it been a long week?

Il be honest, that was a hard read. I'm not sure how you are calling me a numpty though, sure my grammar and spelling might not be great but if I was you I'd not be calling anyone a numpty with that kind of post.

I'm not upset, more confused on what you are actually trying to achieve here? You haven't come to help, just throw insults, talk nonsense and pick holes in everything I say, but that's fine, if that's your thing then it's cool with me, no doubt a little lonely.

I said I could of, but alas Im not like that, hence why I'm here trying to get information so I can go down and have a talk with them about it. Also I'm not sure you get the whole "bull in a China shop" though, I think that term is lost on you, it's not about the bull being awkward, just for the record.

Thanks for your input though, send us an inbox if you want to chat any more, getting a little embarassing you going on like this, it's good to talk, you sound like it could do you good. X
