Very similar to my problem on my 2.0 TFSI engine which turned out to be the electronic thermostat that had gone faulty.
Basically the thermostats on these engines are a electrically controlled valve and what had happened to mine is it had sheared the gear off of the motor which in turn had left the valve partially open causing the same codes as your friends golf and also illuminating the engine light.
According to my TPS guy these thermostats are very common to fail as he said he sells plenty of them.
They have been revised several times as I understand and the latest one addresses the issues.
The waterpump is also in the same housing as the thermostat and is worth changing at the same time for peace of mind.
Hope this is of help to you.

Thank you very much for the reply dadar! Very useful and good information! I have forwarded it on to him, looks like a new pump and thermostat is required.

Cheers again!

Tying in with above this:

P2681 00 [040] - Open Circuit

Is the key fault. Open circuit on VCDS means that there’s a physical problem. Either the component isn’t working or there’s a wiring fault. In either case the the electrical circuit is somehow broken which prevents this part from working.

The rest of the faults stem from it.
