Gearbox noise - 6 speed

Morning all, for a few weeks I have been hearing a noise which I'm presuming is coming from the gearbox.

I can hear it through all the gears, it's a whining noise. Not loud and I can still get all the gears. However would I be right in presuming I need to get the box swapped out or looked at?

Has anyone had any luck by just changing the gear box oil? Car has done 118k miles.

Rear wheel bearings on my S4 started with a low constant whine even though there was no play evident. Didn't sound like a typical worn bearing noise so I too assumed a gearbox or diff issue.

Change oil anyway as it really should be a service item .
