Recently bought a 2004 a4 b6 2.5 v6 tdi (bdg engine code)
It's in limp mode and giving me code 01318 injection pump..
I drove it 160miles home from where I bought it. Wouldn't go over 2.5k revs.
Wiring to fuel pump is all crimp connections and block connections.
I've been told its fuel pump at fault. Now correct me if I'm wrong but if pump were to fail then car wouldn't run?

It's the ECU on top of the pump the usually goes on these. The crimp connectors are probably from an earlier repair when the ECU was removed with the pump in situ and sent off to be fixed. It's never the answer as these pumps need to be set up on a test bench. I'm afraid the pump will need to be removed and sent off to a Bosch pump specialist for testing and repair. It's an expensive repair but unfortunately a common fault on the 2.5 v6 engines. It's very well documented on this forum.

Do the pumps need coded. I've been offered a 2nd hand one at a reasonable price

They do. There is a 3 way match needed between the engine ECU, dash cluster and pump ECU. You will need someone to read the pin code from the car and code the replacement pump. I have a notion that you might need the pin from the donor car as well but can't remember for sure . Reconditioned pumps come with a brand new ECU which is open for coding but not 100% sure about 2nd hand. Hopefully someone on here will know for certain.
