First thread I’ve done and sorry for the long one!

Basically over the last couple of months I’ve been getting an intermittent power steering fault where it’s solid, it’s been getting worse.

So what happens is when I turn the ignition on the red power steering light and yellow traction control light comes on and does loads of beeps saying stability fault. Sometimes it will go off within a few minutes and sometimes I’ll do a whole journey where it stays on and continues to give me no power steering.
When it does decide to work it will work for the whole journey without faults will I turn it off, then when I start it again it’s pot luck if it wants to work.

I’ve got the g85 steering angle sensor fault and j500 steering control modulE

Since the problem I have replaced
-steering control module (same part code and been coded to car)
-squib ring (same part code)
-steering angle sensor (weirdly didn’t have one already)

I have had my car scanned with vcds a few weeks ago and that’s when I then replaced parts as the steering angle sensor wasn’t reading an angle.

Today I had someone else then scan it as I wanted the steering angle sensor calibrated but when he was trying to go through the steps it was saying no signal/communication to the sensor or module so wasn’t available to do the calibration.

I also found out that the guy before me had the steering rack replaced a couple of years ago but he said he never had steering faults.

Has anyone got any advice on where to start looking? I’ve also changed the battery before anyone asks

In the comment is the vcds log

My guess is the power steering rack is ******. What generation rack are you running?

Have you went into VCDS and turned the steering wheel under the steering wheel / groups to check if it's registering the steering assist / torque.

You could try disconnecting the battery and recalibration of the rack again (full lock left, full lock right, centre and drive). I vaguely recall seeing a post about steering racks not calibrating if there's a fault with the wheel speed sensor or ABS unit somewhere.

I don't have the VW / Audi manuals to hand, so couldn't tell you the controller location, most likely behind the steering wheel or passenger side with a CCM module.

EDIT
J500 is the main "computer" for the power steering rack itself, there's no communication to that. You might want to check the fuses / earth's as it's possible there's a ****** earth. I can't remember fully but on my old Golf the power to the Electric Steering Rack ran from a fusable link next to the battery (SA80 I believe) I think it was Fuse number 2.

EDIT2
When my rack was failing, it used to give me the warning beeps (no stability error). I would just get the orange wheel occasionally and then it would go out when driving, usually a hard pothole would cause the alarm to trigger. Eventually when driving I got the dreaded RED Steering Wheel and my power steering was shutdown. Eventually I replaced the rack with a Gen2 unit which fixed the car after calibration.

If the rack is OK, my guess is wiring, or you have a fault with your Can Controller / Gateway

The guy tried to do a basic calibration and calibrations through a few things but it was saying not available and under the power steering it wouldn’t even let him into that file.

It had a rack 2 years ago so hopefully it isn’t that, I think it’s a gen 3 rack.

I’ll check the fuses by the battery, I’m sure I know where that one is. Where would the earths be for the control module do you know?
Thanks for the reply

The calibrations won't work if there's a fault with the controller or gateway. Looking at your VCDS scan it's having problems connecting to them all. Gen3 racks aren't really failure prone, so it's possibly an earth (or dying battery/alternator perhaps - might want to get those tested on the offchance) as I know weak Batteries cause havoc with VW and electronics.

The fusable link I'm 99% sure is fuse number 2 (or 3), I just remember it was an 80 Amp, it should be in your owners manual though which one you need.

The earths for the control module, you'd have to check online via pics. I did have a copy of the manuals from Elsawin but they're on a HDD that's dead at the moment. I'll see if I can find them for you

Just as a note, I'm fairly sure on the Gen3 rack, everything is built into the actual rack (G85, J500) and the other.

If you could find them that would be awesome!
I did put a new battery on and it did no help so I returned it and kept the old one I think it is fuse 2 as I bought a 80a fuse for it to replace but never actually replaced it. I just want a working car

How recently did you put the battery on. Assuming the obvious here, but the connections are tight on it?

If the alternator is ******** it won't charge the battery properly. Only way I can think of load testing it off hand would be having everything running like lights, air con, turning steering etc to put a load on it, and then measuring the voltage at battery to see if it's getting the 14.7v

I'd check the multimeter though to make sure you haven't got a voltage drop between alternator/battery/starter and any earths on the vehicle. This is starting to sound more like a wiring or earthing problem to me.

If the fusable link has blown then you wouldn't really get any power steering whatsoever. I can't think of the Terminals, I think Terminal15 is +12v switched and Terminal30 is +12v permanent (or vice versa). I haven't really been involved in these for ages now. Just got back into VAG again.

Read post #2 reference Alternator test and Wiring.

If you've got a ****** wiring, or ****** battery, the controller isn't going to like it. Get the old multimeter out do a drop test
Reading that link I read to where they said there’s a big connector block behind the drivers side light... I’m going to check that because it started to first start being faulty once I changed my bulbs so I have a feeling it could be that (hoping)!!

I put a multimeter on the battery before and it was all the correct numbers, yes battery’s been on and off many times recently especially when I’ve been changing the sensors and control module as airbag had to come off

How have I only just made an account on the audi forum!? It’s nice to not get sarcastic people from Facebook

Good luck, take a good look at the connections for broken wiring. The wiring itself (if it's the same as my Golf) it runs down the inside of the Passenger wheel arch towards the rack, that point however seems to be common on that article. No idea why, but if it makes it an easy fix all the better

Hopefully I’ll find it, thanks for the advice and I’ll keep you updated, can’t do it for a few days S it’s going into the body shop after being rear ended by a lorry ( luckily only damaged the bumper )

That's fine, I have to sleep anyway up early to take car for it's annual timing belt change :D
Let us know how you get on

So still haven’t solved it! I had the front end off yesterday and checked loads of wires, someone said on a group that it sounds like a faulty abs wheel speed sensor which was random but I read up and if that’s faulty then powersteering will have faults and not worth trying to fix powersteering before the sensor so ordered both rear sensors as the last time I got it scanned on vcds it said that sensor was faulty! So hopefully it gets me somewhere!
