Thanks, much appreciated.Either 5w-30 or 5w-40 is fine for an S3 but won't go into the whys and wherefores as there's enough of that on this forum and others. Just make sure it's the correct specs and away you go

When I used shell the engine was much louder ... I immediately drained it and replaced with castrol, engine was then fineI only use Shel V-Power in my baby so its Shell Helix Ultra ECT C2/C3 0W - 30 for me and change it and the filter regularly.

Yeah 504 / 507 is on the back of the bottleAs per my handbook 502.00 is the specification for petrol engines on fixed interval (yearly) oil changes. It's what the dealers used in mine. 504.00 is the specification for petrol engines on variable (extended) service intervals. 507.00 is the recommended oil for diesel engines. Obviously no problem in using 504.00 even for annual changes. Most oils meet both 504 and 507 specifications and can be used in either engine type.
I've found Shell Helix Ultra to be extremely good at quietening down my TDI. It had Texaco oil in when I bought it. Funnily enough, Shell Helix Ultra is John Deere OEM oil rebadged as John Deere and JD diesel engines are probably the most reliable in the world.
