Oil Level Sensor - will it give a reading if plugged in but not in the sump?

Hopefully a quick one. It's a 3.0 tdi 2008 A5.

I had oil level sensor fault come up, so got the sensor swapped out (along with oil change), but still have the fault.

If I was to get another sensor and connect it up (so the sensor is just dangling in the air) - If it turned out that the initial replacement was faulty then I'd see a different fault wouldnt i? (low oil level warning, not sensor fault).

If I still get the fault then obviously would point to a wiring issue..?

So, turned out to be an easy fix.

The VCDS page for the fault doesnt mention fuses, but there is indeed a fuse for the sensor. In the engine bay, to the left where the ECU is. Mine was fuse #2 (5 amp) but on some models it's fuse #13.
