I am confused about the road tax for the new car.

It is from the used stock so it is already taxed but I read that road tax doesn’t transfer when you sell the car?
So does that mean I will have to pay £1345 before I can drive it away?

If it's classed as used then yes you'll have to pay tax as they need to transfer ownership to you which removes the current tax. But the tax will cost £520 per annum

Tax is £490 and yes you pay it.
It’s classed as a used car.

Road tax has been this way for ages now, as soon as a car passes to a trader it gets filed online that the vehicle no longer is owned by you, so the tax is refunded from that point.

It’s now £520 - went up on the 1st April.

I am still confused? Did the dealer pay the first £1,490 or whatever it was to tax it? What if that’s on direct debit? So that’s why I get the lower rate?

Isn’t the government getting double tax for a new car?

The first year road tax is included in the cars price which contributes to its OTR price so even if someone buys it cash or finances it it doesn't matter it's paid for already

So to answer this yes the dealer did pay it when they taxed it. And no the first year road tax goes off the emissions, from then on it goes off the price of the car (cars over £40k list price are now £520 per annum)

To clarify the car was registered in January by the dealer.

It is used as a result.

What I understand therefore is that:

1) The dealer paid the initial tax which was over £1,000.
2) When sold to me the tax will not transfer
3) I would pay a lower tax amount? (Can I do this direct debit?)
4) The government gets double tax for a new car?

Christ on a bike…..

I bought my ‘new’ RS 3 in March.
It was already registered to an Audi dealer sold to an indie to flip
I bought the car and still had to pay for 1 years tax (at £490 back then).

1 - correct
2 - correct
3 - correct but If you pay by instalments then it’s more expensive.
4 - incorrect - when the dealer sells the car the dvla will refund whichever is lower of:
likewise you’ll get a refund on the car tax from the car you are selling.

Did you sort out you private plate transfer - what was the answer to that one.?
