ESP light - ECU rear axle

I have a 2005 A3 Quattro and the ESP light is on.
Further investigation next week but initial diagnosis points to the ECU control unit on the rear axle.
I believe that a replacement part from Audi is very expensive, so question really is any ideas? Any recommendations for second hand or repair? How vital is it, ie can you run without it?

When my Haldex packed up I spoke with the guy at www.haldexrepairs.co.uk in Crewe. He knows loads on how to repair them and went above and beyond when helping me out. He diagnosed and fixed a problem probably more unique to my Haldex (normally it is internal corrosion issues).
Been 4 years now and no issues.
I would email them and explain your issue.
