S3 instrument cluster questions

The manual for my 64-plate S3 saloon runs to over 300 pages and, although I've searched high and low through it, there are some things to which I cannot find the answer. Please see the attached photograph .. my questions are these:

What does the red number '1' in the distance section mean?
What does the number 4241.9 signify? I guess it's related to distance in some way because it increases every time I've been out.
What function has the grey bar with '0.0' on it, at the bottom of the picture?

From Memory
1 = short term milage ie distance since start if current trip. If you move the left thumb wheel on the steering wheel the 1 should change to a 2 and thus will give you the long term memory milage. Both are reset by pressing the left hand thumb wheel.

the 4241.9 is the trip recorder and is reset by pressing the 0.0
