My first post!
Wonder if you could please help with some advice.
The air con compressor on my S3 8L appears to have developed a rather loud grinding noise.
The car is still blowing lovely cool air and both fans are working correctly but the extra sound is not great!
I contacted a specialist a/c mechanical and was told the following:
The grinding noise is the compressor breaking up internally, when this happens it throws swarf around the ac system.
If you fit a new compressor that swarf will be sucked into it and shot blast the new internals, the only way round this is to have the system flushed with flushing oil, which is a labour intensive and lengthy process.
It’s not something I’d get involved with but it has to be done properly otherwise the new compressor will be destroyed, hope this helps.
Just wondering if this is something anyone else has encountered? Could it be the bearing on the compressor's clutch that's making the noise?
Does it need to be taken to an Air Con specialist or could my local indie replace the compressor?
Any advice gratefully received!
