My 2014 3.0tdi has a slight whirring noise that seems to start from 1200rpm onwards. It speeds up with RPMs but the tone is more noticeable right around 1200-1250rpm, which happens to be the cruising rpm range so at speeds less than about 40 it is audible (to me) although subtle.

It has done this for a while with no signs of getting worse and no running issues. The gearbox has been inspected and listened to with a stethoscope but that seems fine. It's in for a service this month and whilst there the garage is going to check the oil levels of the rear diff and gearbox. The mechatronics oil is being replaced.

The noise appears to be coming from the left side / rear of the engine although it's hard to tell exactly. I'm pretty certain it's not the power steering pump as this is silent when moving lock to lock.

What should I take a closer look at to try and pinpoint this noise as it's becoming a nuisance and I can't help but dial into it knowing that it's there.

Thanks
