i was made redundant before christmas and with not much chance of getting a decent job i thought id keep my self busy with a car to break
got myself a 1.8na facelift but need a bit of help, plus it had a few parts to finish of my quattro in case i have to sell it

firstly how can i dismantle air con? haynes manual just says dont do it, is it just high pressure or harmfull?

rear fixed seat back rest? seems to be locked in by the head rest tubes is there a knack to getting them out?

apt audi a4 engine? only fitted for 2 years is it exactly the same as passat apt engine?

is it possible to remove engine without a hoist? need to keep costs down

cheers guys

Its illegal to knowingly discharge the refrigerant from the aircon into the atmosphere as it is a known ozone holer.
If the aircon is working it might be better to leave it intact until somebody asks for part of it- that way the parts dont get exposed to moisture internaly which realy stuffs aircon.
If it was accidently discharged it comes out cold enought to give you instant frost bite so be careful.
Might be better to get the refrigerant recovered by an aircon specialist- you would still be making money on the parts.
Not sure about the rest of the questions- but I bet the engine can come out the front on a trolly jack if all the front end is off.

an APT is an APT regardless of car its fitted to.

you could drop the subframe onto the floor and drag it out from underneath the car with a couple jacks i guess...

As for the aircon, i think legally you need a certified person to remove the gas from it before you start dismantling it. If its already out of gas then taking it apart wont be a problem, if its still working then its a bit of a dodgy one. You could just unbolt the unions and let the gas vent, but its not good for the environment and i'm sure its probably illegal too.

I'm not sure on the seat back, i think you need to remove the headrests and unbolt something at the bottom of the seat, then push the back upwards to remove it.

am i right in thinking aircon doesnt come on below freezing, as im not sure if its working or not as its been a bit nippy since i bought it, it would be worth getting someone out to recharge my own car as the aircons never worked and get them to empty it at the same time but do i have to wait for a warm day? or can entire system be removed from car for storage without dis charging?

seat back seems to locked in by the channels that hold the head rests

Aircon doesnt come on below a certain temperature close to freezing but it is also pressure related so it does vary a little.
The Aircon people should be able to tell you if they can do it.
You wont be able to get it off the car without opening it up as the evapourater is on the inside of the car behind the blower motor.

Kev, sorry to hear about the job situation mate. The seats can be removed by prising the rear headrest guides out, i think i used a big screwdriver and a whack with the palm of the hand.

Be aware the aircon pump connections seem to corrode on and strip the threads upon removal

If i can help at all give me a shout

cheers mark, rubbish job anyway, got the guides out, not sure if theres much demand for a beige interior but ive sold stranger things on ebay, finally got that relay for the facelift centre console conversion, will give you a shout about wiring it up when i attempt it if thats alright
