Evening peeps,

Was driving home from work this evening when I started getting a knocking/clicking sound and vibrations from the nearside front of the car when going round corners. As I'd just played 1.5hrs of badminton, really couldn't be ***** to sit on the hard shoulder of the M27 and was only 5 miles from home I decided to risk limping it back.

Got her home and upon inspection the nearside driveshaft is ********. It's still in position, held in place only by the CV gaitors, but you can wiggle it back and forth a good couple of inches so it's become detached at both ends. Quite how I got home is beyond me, but it just shows that the Haldex is working as it should!

Some of you know all about the seemingly never-ending problems with power-loss I've experienced on this car, which no number of "specialists" have been unable to diagnose, well since the driveshaft broke she's been performing like a dream! Now someone please explain that one to me!

Anyway, gotta get the RAC to pick the car up tomorrow and take it to the garage where they will no doubt bend me over the desk and shaft me up the ****, and then demand payment for it! :) Anyone got a rough idea how much a driveshaft is to replace?

Cheers,
Andy

Mate best of luck taking it up the **** from them!!! lol

You have had really bad luck with this motor havent ya?

Hope this is the end of your worries mate

All the best

It really has been one thing after another, yeah! She also needs 4 new tyres as well..it's gonna be another expensive month!

Just sat at home waiting for the RAC to arrive at the moment. Am I right in thinking that they'll need a flatbed to move the car as you can't tow a 4wd car?

seeing as it's not a proper 4wd car in that the connection is made by engaging a clutch, not a permanent mechanical link. I see no reason why they couldn't tow the car provided it's in neutral.

Seriously bad luck though mate, it seems to be never ending for you!

You do realise the shaft is supposed to move in and out dont you? Its to allow for change of length in cornering and over bumps.

So its prob just the outer joint thats gone, will probably cost you iro £50 for the part and an hours labour

Oh yeah I understand there needs to be some give in it's movement, but it's not supposed to move in and out 2 inches and make a nasty clunking noise when doing so though is it?

The RAC man turned up this morning and towed it to the garage by lifting the front wheels onto his trolley..said it's fine to do on the haldex as long as it's only over a short distance and you dont go over 30mph. The garage rang earlier to advise that the driveshaft is ******** and needs replacing at a cost of £200+VAT and then 1.5hrs labour to fit it..could be worse I suppose!

not a bad price I did a outer cv joint and it was about £100 for the part from auid. No one else seemed to be able to get the right joint for me,

that seems very expensive, i had my off side driveshaft replaced last week by a friend and he sourced the driveshaft for £80 from motorquip, 200 seems to be alot, if its directly from audi it sounds right but if you want to save a few bucks try elsewhere

It's an Audi genuine part. Could have saved a bit of money by getting a remanufactured one from Motaquip or similar but I'm not a fan of that sort of thing!
