Hi All, After considering my earlier post replies and then test driving the A4 t sport quattro I bought it, then on the way home from his house the car started to miss, then after a further 10 miles it started to judder slightly losing power. I pulled over immediately and got the Green Flag to take me home. £130 quid lighter I phoned the guy who insisted the car was perfect when I left, which during the test drive it was. Anyway to cut a long story short can anyone think what the problem is. At this point I have no tools to do the diagnostic test, I have been told either the coils, turbo or cam belt have gone...great. I'm not to bothered though I just want it fixed to be honest. Although I have had better days. Hope you can help.

thanks, Lorraine

I'd rule out the timing belt. If it's bust, you won't have a missfire, or lose power. A non-running engine can't develop a missfire - it'll be dead.

A dead turbocharger could certainly cause a loss of power, but not a missfire, so I'll rule that out too.

Coilpack or power output stage failure will cause a missfire, as well as a drop in performance, so that's where I'll be looking.

Hi Siena, the car now sounds a little louder, slightly diesel like, no smoke or smells just loss of power, no engine management light. can a diagnostic tell me the answer?
thanks, Lorraine

A diag will possibly mention random / intermittent missfire detected in cylinder/s 1, 3 etc.

Hi again, should I be worried? I have to sort it but it is hugely frustrating, its just with the engine getting louder i'm worried it could be more serious.?

Pull the spark plugs and have a look at them. If one cylinder is obviously wonky, then move the coils around and see if the problem moves. If it doesnt move then its the power output stage, which is mounted on top of the airbox, and is a relatively common fault. If it does move its the coil.

This all assumes its a B5. B6's dont have the power output stage, but they do have coils that are more prone to failure than the B5 ones.

2001 is right on the change over, so which model do you have?

Where abouts in the country are you? Someone might be near by with a vagcom kit that can scan the car for you?

dead coil pack could have you running on three cylinders, noisy, lumpy, low power.......just like a diesel

Do you mean louder, as in "rattly?" Or louder as in rough running? How does she sound at idle?

check the hose from the air box to the turbo has not popped off - this can cause misfire and no idle

At idle it sounds chuggy like, not so much rattling, a low loader is taking it to a specialist my dad knows, he says it could be the coils or the entire engine could have been screwed through an oil clog causing massive issues, at this stage he said over the phone it would be wrong to guess, so he is looking at it around dinner time. I don't feel good about this though, I don't know much about cars but something sounds very wrong, just hope I caught it in time before a new engine is needed. I will keep you updated, thanks for the help all.

Could be something as simple as a loose turbo pipe... look on the bright side and let's hope it is something as easy as that.

You would more than likely have an oil pressure warning light if the pressure was so low that it was causing running issues or even a totally seized engine by now.

Don't worry too much.. the smart money is on an easy fix linked to the ignition IMO.

Hi all, thanks for the messages of support, you were right , a simple coil replacement did the job, she is now purring on the driveway. He talked me through the longterm service issues with audi and their 20,000 mile oil change nonsense. A genuine guy with bags of knowledge and info, much like yourselves. I will be a regular reader here until I learn more about my a4.

Mnay thanks all, Lorraine x

Us hardened professionals caryy spares in the boot, incase of such a situations, lol

Glad it wasn't too much

Have you any pics of the new beast?

Hi all, will get some pics up of the beast tomorrow, while its in one piece.lol

thanks Lorraine

That's great news!

Glad it got sorted quickly and cheaply!

It's one benefit of being on this forum... the massive foutain of knowledge that is available from everybody! I've benefited so much from using this place!

Glad it wasnt too costly Welcome to the forum looking forward to the pics!

We've actually been lucky with ours, and none of the common faults like ICM/Coils etc have gone wrong, even though its on interstellar mileage.

The oil pump is knackered though i guess.

I shouldnt have said that, tomorrow EVERYTHING will break, simultaneously :p

One of my map-reading light bulbs went yesterday.... Nice to have a bit of drama to spice up the ownership experience

my floor mat came off its popper once.

Never had a coil pack go on me in my old B5 guess I was lucky, the B6 on the other hand been a bitch.

Glad you got it sorted Lorraine and trust me you will become a regular if your in to your cars.

The pencil coils on the B6 and associated other models (Golf, TT etc) were well known for failing all the time, I'm sure there was a shortage of them a few years back because that many were failing!

The ones fitted to the B5 are generally more reliable, especially as they are just simple coils, the coil driver being located on the airbox instead of inside the coils like on the B6.

Hi guys
At last the car is running like a dream... Just uploaded some pics...
Thanks again..
