Hi.

Ive got a weird droning noise coming from my s3,
its worst when decellerating from 50-30, it sounds like a wheel bearing noise.
But i cant get any noise from it spinning the wheels by hand and cant load the bearings on corners to make it worse.
Nor can i feel/see and flatspots in the tyres.

Any ideas?

i fear rear diff :sob:

Alos, whilst having a general check of the suspension, on the NSF, theres a small bar (similar to an arb link) going to an electrical connection... this bars bent?.. will that cause any issues?

I'll put money on it being one (or both) of your rear tyres. Try swapping your front and rear wheels around (front to back, not side to side) then taking if or a test drive and if the sound moves forward you know thats your problem.

I had this issue 6 months ago and it turned out to be one of the rear tyres. Put a new tyre on it and problem solved. Unfortunately this was after I'd just forked out for a new rear bearing :(

thats the self leveling for the XENONS, so will not cause any issues with suspension at all. Ours used to drone a bit, but got rid of it when i changed the Haldex oil and filter

The haldex has its own filter!!

is this a difficult job, as so far im getting fed up working on my 45 degree driveway lol.
This sounds likely as it hasnt been changed for 50k.

Wish it was the Girlfriend droning..that would be an easy fix.

I did my own haldex oil and filter change but its not easy on a drive. Below is a guide to do it on the drive but I have access to a pit which was nice and easy. You also need a special tool which is about £30 off ebay:

scroll half way down. There was a better guide somewhere with more pics but I can find it:

I did it on ramps, just enough ground clearence for the tool/spanner thingumy.

TIP, make sure the oil in the haldex is nice and warm

Just read this artical: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/misc35.shtml
looks a nightmare to get to the filter without the tool.

However, £9.67 for the oil/grease and £19.92 for the filter isnt too badly priced.

Has anyone found other methods of removing the filter, without forking out £34.51 for the tool??

If you do a search mate there was a member who was producing a replica of the tool at half the price.

It can be got at with some other tools but getting the old filter off and the new one on are 2 different things and I found my filter was on TIGHT!

i used a hammer and screwdriver to get mine off worked fine just got to be rather careful lol i had the dreaded drone as well but it turned out to be tires all fixed now

not Continentals (sport contact3)by any chance??

UPDATE!

fitted my new alternator pully (1 job fixed)
looked under car on a ramp.... dont fancy doing my own haldex filter change.

But found my noise..... NSR bearing :(
looks a bitch to change too.
Any specialist tools needed?

Phoned volkscraft see if they'll do the haldex, chap on the phone said he doesnt toch them... take it to main dealer :(

I did indeed, cheers anyways ross..

I should have done a guide, seeing as its a common problem.
