I hope this isnt what I think it is, but my S3 just started making a strange whirring/whinning type sound at very low RPM. When im pulling off slowing in traffic and change to 2nd i can notice it.

When put the engine under load I couldnt hear it but think it come and went briefly at one point.

Could this be the start of dreaded turbo problems??

If so this is not a good weekend!!

I think i have the same thing, only in first gear though and when slowing down gradually sometimes, had it for a year and nothing yet, not sure what it is!

I have this problem too, exact same in gear 1 and 2, but cant hear it when ive got speed.

Mine is still going on so i guess if aint broke dont fix it.
I did suspect gearbox, that sounds expensive :-S

Any one had this problem and fixed it?

Been out in the car today and a wizzing noise can now clearly be heard when the turbo is in full flow...

Im assuming this means the turbo is on its way out... Nighmare!!

Few questions please peops:-
Am I correct in my assumption?
Will it still be ok to drive?
New turbo costs?
Will the turbo eventually fail causing other damage?

Any other advice here would be appreciated.

Cheers..

Is there anybody on here who could provide any answers to my previous post?

Looks like I need to get some cash together for a new Turbo or could it be somthing simple? doubt im that lucky mind..

Sounds like a police car with its siren on following me everywhere now!

Thanks

I have had this noise on mazda back in the days, turned out the gearbox was drined out of fluid as the nut had come away, I am not say it is the same, but could be low on gearbox oil if it has never been serviced.

My noise seems to have gone when i put a new battery in, strange

Can anybody let me know the costs for changing the turbo please?

Shall I source a recoditioned one or new?

Not really sure of the best way to resolve the problem.

Cheers

Thanks for the above link. They priced a new OEM one at £815.

Other prices Ive had are as follows all include VAT:-

http://www.arturbo.co.uk/ £699 New, genuine Borg Warner (same as Audi use I was told?)
http://www.aet-turbos.co.uk/ £647 New, Make TBC
http://www.turbocharger-solutions.co.uk/ £397 reconditioned, exchange
http://www.turboactive.com/ awaiting price when part number confirmed.

Have anybody got any experiance of any of the above companies?

Also, Has anybody experiance of using reconditioned Turbos on S3's or would this not be recommended?

Thanks in advance as im finding getting a like for like quote very difficult.

 the turbo isn't involved in low revs so that doesn't workout (just searching for anyone suffering with low speed noise)

I get this in first gear, but only when i let off the accelerator and let the car slow itself down.
Its not causing any major problems and i thought it was quite normal.
Only problem is my 1st to 2nd gear change is very notchy. Doesn't really have a problem at say 6k revs but thats usually because im doing some spirited driving and im throwing it into gear but at slow low rev driving sometimes its clunky
Might be a gearbox oil problem

Fuch Titan or Motul 75W-90

Not sure whether Semi or fully synthetic oil ??????

well mine does it when not in gear so that rules that out.

Best to take it to a specialist. Gearbox, might be a clutch thrust bearing but they don't tend to whine, could be turbo, even when the turbo is 'off boost' its still under stress and if this noise increases with the turbo spooling up then you might have found your problem.

Cheers peops..

I havent been driving the car since Ive had the problem and are taking it next weekfor a proper diagnosis.

If it is the turbo I have been advised that a reconditioned one is absolutly fine as long as its from a good source.

Anybody on here got a view on reconditioned Turbos.

Any comments welcome.

Hi, I have recently noticed the exact same problem in my S3.

When the car is ticking over and you give it a slight rev there is a noise which i can only describe as a siren noise, also when you plod on slowly and change from 1st to 2nd gear and then 2nd to 3rd its also noticeable.

I have recently noticed tiny bits of oil on my drive which could be coming from the gearbox, is this related to the noise? Would the gearbox make a sound when revving even if not in gear?

I dont think it is the turbo as mine is fairly new.

Any response would be so appreciated.

I have a new(ish) turbo on mine so I can rule that out.

It has to be something with the transmission. Maybe a belt somewhere needs replacing.

Anyone figure this out mine started doing it not gear box as put car in neutral going round corner it doesn't make noise until I put slight revs on could it be throttle body?

It could be if car is left idling you get a odd squeak of one of belts maybe it's
the same belt
