8V VCDS Mods

I would dealer it as it's a 2016. Would need to see a scan in order to be sure but the last time I had an issue like this, funny enough with an A1, it turned out to be a loose wiring connector.

Ok thanks buddy.
Its very odd. For some people it beeps and for others not!

I think it being 2016 doesnt help. Ive tried to enable hold assist but it wont let me do anything with the brake module..... Guess I meed to wait for ross tech to sort it out!

When you say that it won't let you do anything with the brake module do you mean that any changes you try to make are met with a security access code required message?

Cant remember the exact wording.....but it lets me change long coding, accepts access code and then throws an access/permissions error...I think maybe josedebardi is right, it doesn't work on 2013 onwards models?

Everything else seems to code fine......

Would need to know what the exact wording of the error message is. If it's security access related then I might be able to find the code, would need a car to plug in to though. If it's request out of range then it might be something that can be activated by VCP instead of VCDS at the moment.

Does anyone know if the speed at which the passing mirror dip on reverse returns to normal position can be changed ?

Mine does it at 10mph id like it to be 5mph.

Thanks ! ;o)

you two, are the only people i read in this thread... i cant be bothered to PM one of you, but i will get VCDS after my honeymoon (3 weeks time)
im an apple person, and i won't bootcamp. so what should i get to run it on. baring in mind, its the only thing i will run. chrome books are pretty cheap but it won't run on them, correct?

Congrats on getting hitched!

I started out by running VCDS (and VCP) via Parallels Desktop Business Edition, using both Windows 7 and 10 VM's. I still do this but I now only take my MacBook Pro outside for use in my own car or when complicated works are involved for which I need a large screen and some processing power, like following ElsaWin etc etc. Now I use a Linx 1010B for VCDS and VCP. Great little £140 tablet which came with a free keyboard doc and runs a full desktop version of windows 10 (home is included) with x2 full size USB2 ports, needed for VCP. Not the most powerful of machines but it beats taking a 3k laptop outside :)

Personally I would go the tablet route as setting up on the Mac would require you getting a VM Host (example Parallels is £80+) and Windows Licence (£80+), and you can get a good tablet for the money instead. If going the Mac route then I have heard mixed reviews about how VCDS and VMWare Fusion play together, but CrossOver seems to work.

Cannot be changed as far as I can see. I believe it might be linked to the Auto-Locking speed setting, but I have not been able to find a tweak for that also :(

Cheers fella. hopefully ill have some spare cash once its over and done with lol.

I've had bad experience with bootcamp / parallels in the past, this would not be an option. i want something dedicated for VCDS.

i did not realise tablets were now running USB ports swell as an actual OS like Windows 10! (again, only using ipads and apple products for the last 12 years, I'm clearly behind on other things!)
i've had a quick google / amazon reviews on the linx 1010B you mentioned, i would only run VCDS for adaptions and fault code clearing, nothing more, nothing less and didn't realise i could do so on a tablet! I'm impressed.
Do you think i would encounter any issues with it, for what i want? (you clearly use it a lot harder than i would mind) and i can download the software direct from rosstech on the tablet or on another computer and then transfer it (USB / SD) to install it?

i trust you're more experienced knowledge, (over mine thats for sure) if you think it'll suit me and my needs, ill add it to the basket (amazon) and get it ordered up ready for when i order the cable!

Big Thanks!

my A4 (B8.5) avant, the mirror would return as soon as i pressed the accelerator in D... so from 1mph. i know they're all different but surely if its on 1 variant, its possible on all ?

If the option exists for the 8V then it's hidden within the untranslated adaptation channels or an unlabelled bit within long coding for the moment :(

Yeah that behaviour would be good mate if that was possible or even as soon as D is engaged. Same with when the reversing camera display switches back to MMI.

I haven't tried it, but it could be linked to the parking sensor switch off threshold (which is configurable with VCDS). I actually increased mine as it annoyed me having to reactivate them when doing multi-story car parks and wanted the security of knowing I wasn't going to scrape the front in some of the tight turns.

I moved from PC's to 100% Apple in 1998. Being a Producer and Musical Director I am heavily invested in the Apple Ecosystem and buying Windows Licences for use with VCDS made me feel really dirty! lol

There are some great little Windows tablets out there but most seem to be limited by RAM, physical connections and mobile versions of Windows. I was advised by Ross-Tech that all I needed for VCDS was a tablet that could run a full desktop version of my chosen O/S and a USB port of any flavour (with a full size port adaptor if needed).

I beat the c**p out of my Linx 1010B on a daily basis (VCDS, VCP, ODIS, ElsaWin, ETKA, Office 365) and have had next to no issues with it, so for what you want it should be more than enough. I know of other people running the 8" version also with no issues.

As for getting software on to it just connect to the net and download straight from Ross-Tech, or download via your mac and use a USB drive or micro SD card transfer over.

+1 recommend for the Linx 1010B :)

You could well have something here! They do indeed appear to be linked. I'll have a nose at lunch time and see if there's a speed threshold that I can change to 5mph - or maybe even just 1mph.

Is there a way to increase LEH headlamp brightness. high/low beam (not the DRL's)

as always, a super useful post from yourself! Cheers.
i know what I'm going to be using for my VCDS set up now.

been a massive help!

Ross-Tech have stated within their own forum that they will not be supporting VIM via VCDS :( For the moment only Vag Can Professional and 3rd party coding dongles can remove the restriction.

If you are in or around London I can activate VIM for you :)

Is there a way to increase LEH headlamp brightness. high/low beam (not the DRL's)

From looking at my adaptation dumps it would seem that LED Low Beam is not possible as it' already set to max value from the factory:
  • Low Beam Front Left = (6)-Leuchte6ABL LC5-Dimmwert AB 6 = 127
  • Low Beam Front Right = (6)-Leuchte7ABL RB1-Dimmwert AB 7 = 127
LED High Beam "might" be possible as it's factory setting is 100:
  • Front Left High Beam = (6)-Leuchte8FL LB39-Dimmwert AB 8 = 100
  • Front Right High Beam = (6)-Leuchte9FL RB2-Dimmwert AB 9 = 100

*Value Range for LED bulbs = 0 to 127

LoL LED main beam is already mental - 127 will be rally mode !!!!

I've just bumped my main beam up to 127 ;o)

Only seeing 16.3.0 available as a Beta with the following notes:

This Beta in particular requires new firmware to be installed in HEX+CAN and Micro-CAN interfaces that, due to architectural constraints in these older interfaces means they will be incompatible with older versions of VCDS, including all current "Release" versions

Ah gotcha - bit risky then as no going back !!!

I got this screen but then it installed 16.3,1 anyway :-

Is a couple of interesting thing in the release notes that might make me update:
  • Added Warnings when non-standard Options settings prevent communications with modules.

  • Greatly expanded the amount of DTC Freeze-Frame data
... shown and deciphered on control modules using the UDS protocol.

  • New UDS Addresses
... for systems such as LT3 Lane Departure, LT3 Roof, and Rear Axle Steering 2

  • New ASAM (ROD file) dataset
... with support for control modules found in latest cars, new more stable location identifier for measuring values, and numerous other enhancements.

I really wish they would add a Live Battery Voltage display!

I can confirm that parking aid assist off and mirror drawdown return speed are indeed two separate settings both set to 10kp/h.
Still looking for the mirror adaptation .....

I wonder what parameters I should look for... Seems my wipers on automode they always wipe, even if there is no rain.
I don't think they have done that before...or maybe I'm getting senile.
Do you guys have the same problem?

Any way to firm up the steering via vcds?
I find it too light.

I would check that your windscreen is clean and unobstructed in front of your Rain Light and Humidity sensor. It's in the base of the mirror, mounted to the screen and looks like a black circle with a clear or white dot / LED in its lower half.

All being well there, and that your light switch is set to auto, your wiper stalk is in the first position (wiper Auto) and speed / interval (switch on top of stalk) is set to first position also (this adjusts sensitivity when in Auto mode) there is not really much else you can do and it could be a fault. The only settings available in VCDS are as attached and not really related to your possible issue.

Not tried / tested this myself but you could try:
  • 44 - Steering Assist > Adaptations > Support Power = Value
One of the following codes will be needed for security access:
  1. 19249
  2. 44595
  3. 28183
We be interested to know how you get on :)

Thanks! No, it's not dirty. Tried to clean the whole area without any difference. I have in stalk in auto and the first step. :( For some reason it seemed to be like that after I changed how often front it sprays water on the lights. But that can't be related...and also put it back to value 8. No difference. Strange that i suddenly is "working" like that.

Strange... Will do some further digging to see if I can find anything that might help.

Yeah...tell me about it :) Seems to be working otherwise normally, the sensitivity in the different steps. But yes, give me a shout if find something.

I tried to increase the timeout for heated seats going from high to medium from the default of 10 minutes to 20 minutes. Changed in VCDS however now it just stays at whatever setting was chosen forever, doesn't drop down after 20 minutes. I'd rather have it like that though than switching after 10 mins so have left it.

A3 Saloon, 63 plate.

I've tried this in the past, it works for less than 10 but just stays on forever for anything over 10.

Also timing for stage 2 to 1 just doesn't seem to work full stop.

DJAlix, thank you for the security code for auto hold in the ABS module!!

So I tried it, and the code works. I was able to change "AUTO HOLD functionality" to "active"
I had expected an adaptation channel of "AUTO HOLD function state" which can be set to "last state" "always active" or "never active" but that setting doesn't seem to exist.

So with auto hold functionality active, I do not get auto hold on the brake pedal, probably because I am lacking the actual button.
I wonder if there is some way to set the function state, maybe VCDS does not have it mapped? I believe in older / other models this setting allowed you to set it to "always on" and have it without the button installed.

Welcome :)

To be honest I would not compare previous cars / models to what we have as there seems to be a lot of differences in the way that options and features are implemented, for example the Green Engineering menu in which A4, A5, A6 cars etc could activate Drive select and maybe VIM... but on our cars Standard MMI = can do next to nothing, TechPack = can do even less believe it or not lol

Long Coding Bytes and Bits are the ones which need mapping / labelling as Adaptations are always present, just maybe in german. So there is no chance of any more adaptations popping up in newer versions of VCDS unless they are added within a firmware update of the module or a newer version of the module hardware.

It may well be that Auto Hold is activated via Adaptations but tweaked within Long Coding, and the needed Bit for "function state" is unlabelled... in fact, even with beta 16.3.1, all of 03 - ABS is currently unlabelled :(

Edit: should have said... unlabelled at least for my current hardware and firmware version of 03 - ABS.
