S4 Exhaust Valve tweak

Yes thanks, loving the car. I have some pics i the A5 forum, I won't repeat them here, I will no doubt be breaking forum rules lol. Only got it last week, still taking it relatively easy!

So, no difference in exhaust behaviour between dynamic and "sport"? And in Individual drive select it gives option to set 'engine noise' - I am guessing this is actually exhaust noise and essentially sets it to behave as though in dynamic.

Sorry for all the questions! Like others, having only one exhaust get dirty I don't like - especially. It makes the other 3 tailpipes appear 'fake'

Well, I'm pretty sure sport/dynamic behave the same in relation to the exhaust. The pops and crackles are the same. With this mod, if engine is set to dynamic in individual, even in drive...there's some lift off pops.

And ask away! That's what the forum is for

Personally I can't hear any difference. Is it me?

On your own? You unplugged both sides?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yeah unplugged both and even brought in the wife to hear. Without setting up a sound meter, I guess it's hard to test accurately...

Are you sure you've unplugged them both in the open position?

You should be able to feel the exhaust flow from both sides with the engine running.

Yes both open - when started from cold yesterday could see the mist coming from both.

After driving to work this morning, I'm now not convinced it isn't louder! Think I'm going to set up a noise reading!

It should be noticeably louder buddy. Not like...Akrapovic noticeable haha. But definitely louder on idle and low revs.

And compared to non-dynamic or sport modes obviously

Yeah efficiency and comfort are louder but not as aggressive...somehow.

How is this mod different from just using individual and setting sound to dynamic? Exhaust sounds louder when I do this on my B9 S5.

The valves are closed at low rpm and start up at all times. This keeps them open constantly.

Are you 100% convinced on the low rev thing. That was all over the internet for the B8 until i proved otherwise.

You still have the cycling requirement as previous generations where it never starts in proper dynamic mode.

Yes start up as they always start closed (unless it is very cold) even if you shut it down in dynamic. What I'm questioning is whether low revs is the same with them disconnected vs. you cycling through the modes before you set off.

Arrrrrrr. I see. All I know is that, it's louder and deeper. More throaty. Honestly.

So best way would be to turn the car on, switch to Dynamic, put it into sport, switch off engine and disconnect connectors on the exhaust?

They close on 'ignition off' anyway.

I just disconnected then ignition on and they stay open.

Just to add to the confusion I am pretty sure the valves open on Startup (well mine do) and then close after 5ish seconds if in non-dynamic mode.

Yeah it was less than 5 secs on mine. Seemed it anyway. Now that it's done I can't remember. Haha. But they're 100% open. Fully now. Unless someone can stick a GoPro in their pipe (easy missus) and do a low rev drive recording? Long story short, it's louder and better. Nearly zero drone.

Yeah love it. I'd found myself always flooring it for the sound but now just floating around it always has a nice note to it.
Wife noticed it and said I'm sad lol.

I've been like a kid at Christmas since Thursday.

People are saying it's got no character. I may have been one of them. It's got far less 'soul' than my old B8.5 but, the exhaust is more characterful for sure. Especially now. There's loads I'd like to do with her. Maybe some carbon wrap accents, H&R lowering springs, new wheels etc. But, not sure I'll be keeping this for long and that's barrrrrrrrre monies to throw into a car. Would look good though! Roof rack too just for show

You sound as bad as me.
Mine is a 2 year lease so pointless spending lots on it.
I had been looking at a carbon lip and lowering springs. Also thought of looking at getting the rear valance wrapped. Think I'll just drive it and enjoy for now.
I have never drove a b8 so nothing to compare it to.

Where were you looking for a carbon lip? I haven't seen anything great tbh. The B8 had so much available for it. TAG motorsports, Vorsteiner and Eurocode had some lovely splitters and diffusers.

ECS Tuning have a carbon front lip and carbon surrounds for the side intakes that I think look pretty good. Awesome GTI is the UK supplier if I remember rightly so if you're interested you could always give them a shout.

I like the diffuser shown on the A4 too. Hopefully they bring out one for the S4. The lip is very nice indeed. Think I'd just wrap the side skirts. All this would depend on me keeping my car longer like but thankful to see the mods rolling out for it now

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's exactly what I thought. The diffuser looks nice and mean but not over the top. Guess it depends on how much it costs for me too in all honesty, could be prohibitively expensive!

Could be more expensive in all honesty. Vorsteiner mods certainly were on the B8! But yeah, it's one of them..."Do I really need this?" Mods haha. I'm tempted but takes away from RS4 fund

Haha, that's fair enough! I wanted a new RS4 but decided just to get an S4 instead because it's gonna be a while before they're available to order, and now that the RS5 configurator is up I'm sorta glad I did. Putting on some of the really nice options makes it ridiculously expensive!

For the costs, I think taking things like exchange rates and import tax and stuff into account I think they'll probably be the same price in £ as they advertise for in $. So £1100 for the front lip and rear diffuser. And an extra £360 for the vent surrounds. Really expensive but would look awesome!

I think the only mods in the pipeline are the Milltek, spacers and then eventually some springs. If I find a chunk of cash then maybe get some carbon. Haha.

Was Ecs I had looked at. My mate lives in Oregon could send it over.
Would love a milltek but big enough ££.
Had thought of spacers but not sure if I want to lower it.

I have people in the US too but I don't know if it would end up much cheaper with the shipping and tax costs? Shipping from the US is ridiculous!

Arrrrrrrrrr. Ok, so I was just doing currency conversion. You're very right then! That is quite pricey. Haha. Mate, I went HARD on that RS5 configurator the day it came online. Nearly touched £100,00!! For a ****** RS5. Some of them options are ridiculous. But I'm gonna go B8 RS4 for a while then once the nutters at Audi Sport calm their beans and lower the price on the B9 RS4, I'll take a stab at it. Looking forward to seeing your spacers.

Yeah, I did the same, I think it was something like £92,000 with my options. Mad for an Audi coupe...

Maybe if I find some spare cash I'll ask AwesomeGTI how much it would be. Until then I don't want to ask because I know I can't afford it.

I'm banking on you being the guinea pig If I hadn't an RS in mind, I'd go full hog on this. Spacers, exhaust, springs, wheels, aero...the lot. But time moves quickly and a deposit is an important thing!
