Mine sounds identical on tickover and has since I bought it (it's done 20k since then!). Anywhere above 1k rpm and it's smooth as butter, still pulls evenly and smoothly. I get the starting issue occasionally, but the sensor is just a symptom so changing that won't solve the issue IIRC

it's buried well inside the engine from what I've been told, had the same issue intermittently, solved it by using high quality fuel! Whether it'll come back with a vengeance if i switch back I have no idea, prefer the way the car runs on it anyway :)

Agreed, alternator sounds like it's on the way out. I had the same issue with my last car (Leon Tdi), alternator ended up going clunk and needed replacing - battery went the same way not long afterwards due to the strain it had been under!!

I've recently started running my 2.0 FSI on 98/99, and it does seem a little more responsive. I've also seen a massive increase in mpg since making the switch. Not sure about mapping though (although mine does seem to run more smoothly)
