random beep

sometimes, well occasionally my A4 starts beeping purposefully, every 30secs for about 10 minutes, you get a second long beep. no lights come on the dash and nothing seems, wrong.
I've had a look through the manual, but I have no idea why, its a bit offputting on the mway.
what is it?
53 plate 1.9tdi avant quattro.

poss alarm siren?

its like a warning beep, like the petrol sound or other warnings.

its only when youre driving. can hear it in the car, not parked up like an alarm
