Im getting a Laptop shortly and after any recommended choices..

ive looked into a Dell and Sony..

not bothered about price just need a really good Lappy to do my work on..

Needs to be Wi-Fi and have a High End Graphics Card with 60gb+ HDD

but the main factor it needs to be as small as possible...

i like the small sony ones that are like 10.3" screens.. but unsure of the spec..

any others out there that are worth a mention and a gander at?

Richy,

In my opinion, Sony are Top Dogs. But if you're not worried about price, it's worth looking at IBM as well, strong machines that last for years (my first Laptop made by them still works, and it's a 1995 DX2 50MHz with a whopping 120 MB harddrive and 16 MB of DRAM /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif)

But if you're looking for Graphics, neither Sony or IBM are tops... although it pains me to say it, Mac are the best in this field!

My end opinion, I would still go for Sony. hope this helps? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

If your looking at brand names then Dell are prob near the top of the list. There are some specialist laptop/pc makers out there that put together some stonkingly fast laptops (alienware springs to mind)

Rich... I know you mentioned specs wise what you want but do you want to stick to main stream brands ?

Tosh, Dell, Sony are all great, id go with sony as the are a great all round package and generally have a good Graphics card in them.

I have an old Dell lappy, pentium 1, 233Mhz, 128Mb RAM two Hard drives one 6Gb and other 4Gb and runs XP ok!

cool.. well its looking like sony from my view also..

only probs i fear is that
the ones i am looking at are 1.1 or 1.8

T Series / VGN-T1XP/L
&
S Series / VGN-S2XP

the t series is the smaller one out the 2 with the 1.1ghz and would be my choices out of the 2 but it doesnt have a proper graphics card /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif do you know if sony do upgrades or custom specs. ?

if not then its looking like the S series.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

only problem is, that the smaller screen only comes on a basic spec.. by the time you spec it up to the general spec the sony and dell's are your looking at 1800

and 1800 for something that looks tacky.. humm.. sorry.

I would go with Dell Inspiron series.
Get your self one with Pentium M Processor 2.10 GHz, 2MB 400MHz FSB and a 17.0" widescreen WXGA+ LCD.
It comes with built in wifi and optional built in bluetooth. Get a massive HD and 512 upwards of ram.

Looks like this
Inspn_9200_front_131x145.jpg

Their customer service is great as well they have been in the computer market for ages and are well structured and don't make all electronics like sony etc so all their effort and time is used in making great computers.
If you get them on the phone as well they can usually chuck in some freebess etc.

In that case you want a Dell Latitude X300 od D400 these have a 12" screen.
The X300 goes up to a 1.4GHz and the D400 goes up to a 2.0GHz CPU.
Being ultra portable and small the XGA screens only go up to 1024x768dpi when out of its dockingstation. Which is a shame.
But they are a good price.

I'd go for Alienware laptop, best spec out there and has highest end graphics you're gonna find in a laptop. The 5500 has 15" screen, but it you want a smaller latptop then go for the IBM X series thinkpads.

what will you be using the machine for?
and why does it have to be small? Does it also have to be light? Why do you need a top end graphics card? Sorry for all the questions....but will help with the answers.

If its small...
fujistu do a tiny laptop - called a lifebook or atleast it used to be.

Dell Inspiron 9200 is the way forward, there are 2 on eBay for around £899 with 1 year warranty, 128 ATI Radeon graphics, 512 MB RAM, 60 GIG hard drive, Intel Centrino wireless etc, Pentium M 1.7 GIG and the 17" Screen is widescreen hence the 17" from bottom corner to top corner accross. I have always had Dell and they are the dogs bits, I now no longer have a desktop and use my Insprion 8200 for gaming as well and that only has a 15" Screen and a 64 MEG ATI Radeon 9700 card in it /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

IBM all the way.

Look dated, but they are a proper business tool /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I use IBM T42 and getting the new T43 this week if all goes well. Other than that i would go Alienware as mentioned above if cost aint an option. Good luck /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beerchug.gif

i will be using the machine for work as well as my own work on my website and also graphic rendering and movie editing.

but i need it small and light as it needs to be something i can take everywhere.. as one with a 15" and 17" screen im just going to leave at home and not bother with... and so might aswell stick with what i have as a desktop..

this is the machine or type i was thinking about...not sure about graphic capaibilties, but its small.
i'm out the market for 2 years so not really sure what its current competition is. i remember sony had a small vaio back in the day too.

lifebook link

found one i like now /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif and so going to order it this week.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

gone for the sony VGN-S2VP

cheers for the helps guys.. appriciate it.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yeah I've got a T40 very good laptop.

Saying that I've had a T21 and a T23 in the past and they were good as well.

Yep - I got a T20, quite old I know but does it's job. It's a works laptop and would like it to be faster, but being a works one - they wont spend money "If it aint broke - dont fix it" !. And even if I do break it, I'm likely to get a recon T20.
So I guess the T40 will be alot better and faster.

going back to the discussion its been said that the sony laptop i like is going to be discontinued.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

humm.. the hunt is still on then..

with regards to the memory.. some of the lappys are sharing their memory for the video card..

now ive always had a geforce, voodoo etc. but the shared memory way is it any good?

mine's shared memory.
it really depends what sort of thing you want to do.
obviously with it being shared memory, you have to loose some of your RAM to it, that amount you can choose in the BIOS.
It also is not going to be as fast as the commands have to go through more registers than if it was dedicated.
Having said that, I have used CAD programs with no problem.

Really depends on what you mean by graphics rendering.

I would go for a compact, lightweight and durable laptop as like ya say, ya not going to take it with you if it's a biatch to carry around!
VAIO laptops really do look the business! Have you looked at the mac ones though as if ya want to do video editing and grapics, they are quite the business.

the mac's seem really good but i hate the operating system..

dunno why.. just seems un-natural and hard in everyway.

suppose its something to get used to..

but the spec list for the price is awesome.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

audi5e...

if the computer cannot be fixed by me then its totally broke...

who needs support.. the only time i need support is when i drop the ****** down some stairs and into a puddle..

then i call them up /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

so you write your own drivers etc ? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/book.gif

From a sales point of view, the sony are the funkiest and offer what you require. if you want support for the device then HP or Dell would be your best bet. Out of the two I would say Dell due to the overwhelming price difference, have a look at www.dell.co.uk/outlet, they offer discounts of old/returned stock and some bargains can be found. If the device is evolved for business then the HPNX7010 is very good comes with a 15.4" screen or the NC6120 comes with a 12" screen, both offer cracking value for business and have v good specs DVDR offered and XP Pro.

I was meaning it in the sense of you'll need access to the laptop maker's website ... to access drivers etc. Dell is one of the best around for this, so you will also need some form of support. For example Time computers used to sell decent spec cheap laptops, but there support site just didn't exist, thus you'd be shafted if you need to rebuild/re-install the OS etc.

i dont understand why you would goto the Dell,Tiny, etc website to update any of it anyways..

they just simple put the thing together..

i personally would goto the actual maker of teh HDD and update straight from them...
