Notchy gear change

I have a 99 a3 1.8t Quattro 5 speed.

The gear change is notchy and it makes no difference wether its hot or cold.

Ive tried resetting the gear cables but it hasn't made much difference.

The mileage is 161000 would the cables be too worn and need changing or am I doing something wrong?

Best bet is to change the gearbox oil first.
