I had the following rattles in my s3 and fixed them with WD-40 Specialist Anti Friction Dry PTFE Lubricant which you can get from Halfords for £5 and doesn't leave behind a mess -

  1. Dash rattle - my dash was rattling around the air vents which demist the windscreen, I couldn't pin point where so after removing the glove box and tightening screws and applying tape to different places I found the possible cause. I read on a forum that an Audi dealer gave a can of silicone spray to a customer complaining of a squeak and it worked. I used the above spray and it seems to have worked a treat, just spray it all around where the dashboard meets the windscreen.
  2. Passenger headrest - I could here a rattle next to my left ear and thought it was possibly the seat back loose but after further investigation it was either the headrest or the holes which the headrest goes in. I looked on the forums again and found one person had there's replaced under warranty, one who used the paper clip trick and one who used electrical tape. my method was to pull the headrest out and turn it upside down and spray the lube in and also into the holes where the headrest goes. I cannot hear the noise anymore.
  3. Window rubber noise - everyone with an 8p A3 knows about this one, it's when the top of the door frame rubs on the body of the car and squeaks. People use various fixes including the lube from VW and Einszett Gummi Pflege but it eventually comes back and the second one causes mess. I used the above spray and its gone but I don't know if it will withstand the test of time but its another bonus from just one product for £5.
These rattles drove me mad for months and I hope the above helps other members out so they can begin to like their cars again!

What about hand rest rattles? they're driving me crazy!

You mean the arm rest of the door card? When you drive along or when you grab it to open/close it?

clearly lost their way haven't they!
My mkv golf didn't rattle like my s3 does but Audi is supposed to be the premium brand of the two :uhm:

I mean the stuff between the seats, where you put your hand between gear changes :D

Ahh right I see, well not long after getting the car I bought genuine leather replacements from a seller on eBay, I believe he sold a few members on here some stuff. Never had any rattles with them.
The standard ones are poor quality like the indicator plastics are. They are easy to remove though. I suggest removing them and trying to fit some velvet tape under them and maybe the above lube for good measure :)
Also if you do this make sure not to over tighten them as with expansion/contraction due to the weather it will definitely make noises and over bumps too.

Good for 40 days hows the smell though?

Good for 40 days? There is a slight smell but will comment more on this in a day or two. The smell is not bad at all though in my opinion and reckon within a few days it will die off.

The 40 in WD40 means it lasts up to 40 days, halfords sell another silicone spray made by that famous oil tin company(that famous i cant remember the name) they make the same and they have a better smell halfords have their own as well i used them as coatings on my bike plastics as it used to bring the black back

I have the worlds most annoying rattle somewhere on the drives sit in the dash, I've checked everything under the steering wheel even in the steering Cawol.

Next thing is to take the instrument cluster out.

Ahhhh lol

Cheers Dan

No sure it will work mate I think its the plastic in the headrest itself. The only way to cure it is to replace the headrest. Ive tried securing the tabs inside the seat itself with material and it still does it :(

Hmm see i tired to swap the headrests over and it still seems to do it. interesting one!

I can only assume it's the plastic where the metal bars go into are to cause or possibly the metal retainers that hold the bars at different height levels. It is a real pain in the ****!

My intermitant glve box rattle is n a welcome state of respite :)

:D Not heard that one before.

But as already said, the 40 means "40th Formula".
