My car had a rattling aircon compressor for a few months last year and eventually stopped working and the ECON light now stays on all the time, but as it broke in October I just left it.

Now it's warming up I'm looking at getting it replaced, been quoted near enough £700 by my local Audi specialist for supply and fit with a re-gas and dye check.

Nearly £400 of that is the compressor itself so I'm thinking I'd be better off just getting a reconditioned or used one. Does anyone know where you can get reconditioned aircon pumps for the 1.9TDI from?

Replaced mine with a £50 used one off ebay about 3 years ago, still going strong.

Is there a way to check that the clutch is working on the replacement one before fitting, as it's probably the clutch that's knackered on this one!

I meant more the level of wear than the electrical side of it, as it tends to be the clutch internals that wear out and ruin them.

It's the rubber shock absorbers in the pulley that wear out normally. You can get a pulley kit from TPS for £120ish or search German ebay where it's about £80. Also seen the rubbers for sale for just a few quid on Ebay de too.

I got a second hand one off eBay last year for £60 and had a groupon deal for aircon regass £40.

I'm thinking second-hand is the way to go, if I can get one for that money it would be cheaper to change it twice than fit a new one the first time!

You better get yours repaired with a new kit from TPS or dealer...

Don't get reconditioned. You'll find it's a condition of the warranty that it's installed professionally (ie, not you or a mate for cash).

I spent around £200 on a recon and it turned up from Poland looking like new. Lasted that summer and when the seasons next turned it was no longer working.

The economics of it (relative to the age and value of your car) mean second hand from breakers is the way to go. You don't need to pay more than £50 delivered, though now the temp's going up, so might prices a little.
