Facelift Retrofitting rear view cam without navigation?

Hi all,

The car is an Audi A3 2017 without any form of navigation installed.

Vagtec sells two versions of the camera.

The high version with moving guidelines:

On the bottom it says
Compatible only with:
MMI Navigation or MMI Navigation Plus

Okay, can't use that one.

And then they sell the low version without the moving guidelines:

Compatible only with:
MIB Standard
MIB Standard Nav
MIB High

Now I would think my car has "MIB Standard" (what's the difference between MMI and MIB by the way?) but I sent Vagtec an email asking if it would work in my car and they replied no, your car has to have navigation either way because Audi made it that way.

Now I'm confused because why would they put "MIB Standard" and "MIB High" without nav behind it if the car needs to have nav anyway?

I don't think the lady at their support email really knows what she's talking about so I'm asking you experts here instead...

Well I don't know the answer to this, but I can say that I have standard MMI and no nav and my reversing camera does have moving guidelines.

Nothing to do with Nav...works with and without as stated in the description

Reverse Camera high will work with all versions of the MMI both PFL and FL, with navigation enabled or not. MIB is the "VAG internal" name for MMI Unit.

If interested I will have a "High" kit available soon as I have just ordered a new car.

Reverse Camera High will. I would need to test but I believe Low will not work with any FL MMI unit.

Audi has changed the MMI naming convention with FL cars. Up until the FL introduction it was as follows:

• MMI Standard = Low
• MMI Standard + SD Nav = Low + SD Card Navigation
• MMI Techpack = High with Navigation
• MMI Techpack Connect = High with Navigation & Connect

Now it's just Navigation and Navigation Plus.

Just to throw something else in to the mix... there are now two versions of the Reversing Camera High.

PFL = Camera Unit, Control Module, Camera Cables, MMI Cable, Control Module mounting bracket

Wouldn't be without a rear cam now either - just wondered if the aperture had changed for improved low light performance ? not that it's at all bad. Maybe Audi took a leaf out of Apples book and tweak the camera at every release LoL!

At every opportunity OEMs are looking to take cost out too so it's probably a change of supplier for that reason.

Just finished installing the kit from Kufatec and wired everything up. Plugged in the coding dongle as per Kufatec's instructions.

But it doesn't work.

In the manual it says to plug in the dongle after ignition has been on for at least 30 seconds. Then a constant LED will light up.

When I plug it in, the LED starts pulsing instead of beging constant. About 1-1,5 second pulses. Left it going for 2-3 minutes and plugged it out, put the car in reverse but nothing.

It doesn't say how long the dongle is supposed to be attached either. Maybe it didn't even start the coding? Help

Could be a number of reasons as yo why this does not work. The coding dongle use assumes that everything is installed without issue and able to communicate with each other over the CAN. I am betting that there is a 6C control module coding issue (common) or there is no CAN communication to the CAN Gateway. Do you have VCDS or know anyone that has as you need a diagnostic scan.

Nope, the Camera will work with any Navigation system and the coding is the same if on Standard or Techpack systems. I believe the issue could be any of the following:

• Incorrect Install (CAN or Power wires connected wrong)
• Faulty Install (power issues etc, Faulty earth is a common issue)
• Faulty component
• Un-parameterised 6C control Module (cannot be coded in anyway without re-flashing firmware)

The supplied dongle, I would assume, is expecting to see that everything that is connected correctly and working correctly before performing it's coding function. Using the control module as an example, assuming that everything is installed correctly, if the control module is not able to accept the coding then the process on a "whole" will fail. Problem is that without a diagnostic tool there is no way of knowing what the issue could be or where it's falling down.

Digging in further this is what the dongle would need to complete:

1. Add 6c control module to the CAN Gateway installation list
2. Set the CAN gateway x6C adaptation channel to coded
3. Change the needed VPS adaptation channel to active within 5F
4. Soft Reset the MMI Unit
5. Change the long coding of the control module (6c)

No idea how 5 is possible via a generic dongle as normally you need to select the body type of the vehicle, region and if there is a tow bar connected or not.

You need to get your car scanned via VCDS or alike in order to work out whats going on. If you are near London I can help.

Search for 6C, two channels will be found. Change the top one to coded.
Save
Exit module 19

Go to module 5F
Search for VPS
Change the first found channel to activated
Save

Reset MMI Unit

Run an auto scan and ignore the results. Select clear all DTC. Once complete run an autoscan again but make sure you have untucked freeze frame first. Let us know the results.
