Rear view camera retrofit doesn’t work

I’ve retrofitted a FL camera unit to my PFL 2013 8v Sportback. For wiring I followed the retrofit tutorial Amit78 posted as well as coding instructions. Unfortunately nothing happens once I pop it into reverse.

By reading 6C advanced values I can see the camera is alive; system status changes to active when I put the car into reverse, steering angle changes etc. So I believe the issue is with 5F that’s not changing the display to show the camera output.

Okay, so after doing some tests I’ve found something interesting.

When I put the car into reverse and then reset the MMI, while the MMI is booting up it shows the reverse image for a few seconds and then disappear once it boots up.

That’s why I’m 200% sure the problem is in 5F.

I did my retrofit around 2 weeks and all working fine with the coding below on my 2017 facelift S3:

1.
Register the 6C module in the gateway

2.
if you have installed parking assistance system
please code " 10 " . tick rear camera installed .

3. Module 6C code :
02 73 01 01 02 00 20 01 40 00 40
I didn't need to do this as my camera worked. My 6C module coding is different to the coding stated above

4.
Finally you have to enter the Module 5F

Adaptation

Search for
Car_Funktion_List_BAP_Gen2_VPS_0x0B Switch to activated
Car_Funktion_List_BAP_Gen2_VPS_0x0B_msg_bus dial terminal 15

It might be worth contacting the seller of the retrofit kit to get the coding off them. I didn't need to reset the MMI after coding.

Yes, that’s exactly what I have as well except mine is Databus Comfort for the VPS message bus and not terminal 15 (tried that one as well).

You have facelift so I assume they’re less prone to errors.

Where did you install the CAN connections?

Hello
in to the gateway under the rear seat, 12 can high (Orange purple) and 30 can low (Orange brown)
I can see the 6C live now after the connection in ODIS, if I change to reverse I can see the change in the 6C, the problem is the display no change

I’ve retrofitted a FL camera unit to my PFL 2013 8v Sportback. For wiring I followed the retrofit tutorial Amit78 posted as well as coding instructions. Unfortunately nothing happens once I pop it into reverse.

By reading 6C advanced values I can see the camera is alive; system status changes to active when I put the car into reverse, steering angle changes etc. So I believe the issue is with 5F that’s not changing the display to show the camera output.

Yes I see the process in the same as the A4

After connection the video in the cuadlock in the mmi 6 and 12, connect the Canbus cables to the gateway, then
Register the 6C module in the gateway
enter the Module 5F

Adaptation

Search for
Car_Funktion_List_BAP_Gen2_VPS_0x0B Switch to activated
Car_Funktion_List_BAP_Gen2_VPS_0x0B_msg_bus dial terminal 15

The module 6c looks working because in the measurements I put reverse and detected I move the steering wheel and change values, and no error or issues detected by the Odis sacan tool

But the display Don't change to show the image , do nothing

You need to long code control module 09 also

Even though it shows the OEM display with the translucent blue box on the video image, mine came with an aftermarket camera so it has coloured lines instead (which I prefer because it's difficult to see what's under the blue box). It all works as it would from the factory and mine has a trailer mode/birds eye view too

If I can take some of your time , do you recommend this camera? What’s your experience with it ? Is it a good oem alternative are all the “modes “ available? Even in dark light? Sorry for all the questions but I am in doubt.

It works as OEM and I haven't had any issues with it. I've attached an image of how it displays. Works well in low light conditions too

How much are people paying for the reverse camera to be supplied and fitted i have wanted to get this done for ages but never got round to it .

The issue was the 6C configuration
If is not setup in base of you model equipment is not do nothing and your display don't show the camera
For me was to change to only rear parking sensor and works , this are the instructions if someone else need it
Changes are made in ADDRESS 6C "rear view camera".
- Connect address 6C "Rear view camera"
- Select coding
Code this controller as described in your VCP / VCDSdiagnostic system, depending on vehicle equipment.
We deliver this control unit already pre-parameterized as well as pre-coded.
Complete this already existing "standard coding" with the respective vehicle equipment.
Example codes:

That tends to mean that the coding is incorrect. That also happened to me, in my case it was because I had OPS enabled in the parking module (10 Park/Assist) when I did not have it installed in the car (a few months prior I tried to enable OPS with only having rear sensors installed which is not possible in FL models and then forgot to turn it back off - leaving it on did not have any effect at the time but then messed up with my rear camera when I had it installed a few months later).

Coding should be:

1.Register the 6C module in the gateway

2.if you have installed parking assistance system, go to "10 Park/Assist" - tick rear camera installed.

3. Module 6C

Firts of all thanks for your reply ! My camera is from Ali express (check photo) and its supposed to be plug and play...from feed back I found 2-3 clients that the have successfully install it in same car like mine (Audi A4 b9 2016') now I'm waiting to receive my obd11 so i can try you coding advice...also my rear parking sensors are after market ....

Yes, but your headunit needs to know what to do with the signals it's getting.. You will need to let it know it can expect a videosignal on PIN (x) when you put your car in reverse etc.. So you need to code the thing. Just like everything else you retrofit, modules need to know the hardware is there before you can start using it.

Step by step:

Select 19 Gateway
Select Adaptation
Select Installation list, specified installations
Search „camera” in the list and check Coded and then Slide to write

Select 09 Central Electrics
Select Long Coding (Attention! Do a full backup of your current long coding number before any new long coding)
Check the icon with „01010101” on the top right corner, select Byte Index and enter value 35
On Byte 35 check Bit 4 and then Slide to write

Select 5F Multimedia
Select Adaptation
Search for „Gen2” and select Car function List BAP Gen2
Search for „VPS„, activate VPS 0x0B and on VPS 0x0B msg bus select Terminal 15
Slide to write

Then try to register 6C to gateway but i have communication problems so I can't edit 6C is black not green like everything else....

I'm using VCDS mate.

I see you have no communication with the 6C module. Then the CAN Hi and CAN Lo are not connected properly. Can you check that?
The grey connector in the quadlock connector, PIN 6 and 12 are they occupied? And if so, do they run to the camera or only to the "original quadlock" because then that is only used for your headunit.

The camera you bought is not a highline one, I think this taps into the system on a NON-OEM manner(?). Normally there should be 2 orange wires running from the camera to your CAN wires to enable communication between the module and the car mate.

I just had a look at the ad on Ali (https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/4000...1;51.11;-1;-1@salePrice;EUR;search-mainSearch)

If you read the description there is alot of cars from your year who are not compatible. It's a bit weirdly translated from Chinese into English but I would reckon to contact the seller and ask if he can help you out.

The normal way is that the camera needs to be registered to the car in the CAN-GW like you did. Then when you click on the 6C module it will communicate with camera over the CAN Hi and CAN Lo signal wires. Those are the twisted orange wires into the 12 pins grey connector block in the quadlock connector that goes into the unit.

As far as I can see there is only 1 cable going to the camera, thats the cable with the purple connectors. How many PINS does that connector have? It needs atleast 6 pins otherwise you are missing out on some...

- 12V power PIN
- GND pin
- CAN high
- CAN low
- Videofeed IN
- Videofeed

If that does not have atleast 6 pins then I'm not sure how this will even work on an OEM MIB unit...

Also a lot that they say that fits.... anyway yes purple wire has 6 pins...today i have noticed that camera also works for 10 seconds when i start the car and select R....its working during mmi boots or reset but when mmi finally open camera stop working

I contacted with seller he send those photos....i read somewhere else that maybe CAN-high & CAN -low wires have to be reversed thats why 6C module cant be registered... I'll try it later on....

red: power,
black: ground,
yellow: video+
green and white canbus hi/low

Well that is has 6pins is a good thing tough.. if you cant enter the 6C module then its a communication error (if you sure that it has proper 12V and GND). This comed down to your canbus connection. Are you able to do any continuity test on the wires?
