I tried to replace the instrument cluster on my Audi a3 so (2004) as the clock wasn't working (!). the replacement was slightly the wrong type (type d instead of f). car wouldn't start due to anti theft, so I removed the new cluster and replaced the old one. since then power steering and esp lights are on constantly and power steering doesn't work at all!!! any help in understanding what I've done to my car would be appreciated !

You must drive the car a bit & do some turns left/right, if they don't go, then the it needs recalibrating with vcds.

Cluster isn't at fault, it just needs the correct tools to code to the car.

Thanks, I tried driving round the block but alas, it hasn't cleared. I've booked it in to my local Audi dealership to be sorted out. it's just frustrating that there is no sort of reset that can be done! plus I'll have to embarrassingly admit my shortcomings at the dealership! ;)

If you've got someone local with vcds it's a simple job for a few beer tokens. No need to get stung down at the dealers mate!

Also have you tried
starting the car
Turn the steering fully one way and hold for a few seconds (say 30)
Turn fully the other way and hold again for a few seconds
Re centre and drive forward a few metres

Worth a try

Thanks Ju, that's done the trick. no sooner had I turned to full lock on both sides than I had power steering back! thanks for your advice, much appreciated. I don't suppose you have a similar trick for esp do you?

I think that might go when you drive off tbh

I guess replacing the cluster do require coding the keys for the new one? It was damn hard findinf someone in Denmark who could code keys and code the cluster with matching km/miles.

Yes, I had no idea that
parts needed to be recoded, but I guess it makes sense from a security point of view. I'll do a bit more reading next time!
