'Gearbox malfunction' - Audi A3 (2015) 1.6 auto

New to these forums but I'm just wondering if anyone's experienced this before?

I was driving last night, then when I put the car into reverse there didn't seem to be much power. Put it into drive and virtually no power at all. At this point I got an error message on the dash saying 'gearbox malfunction: you can continue driving...'.

Without taking it into a garage does anyone have any idea what the common causes for this are and what sort of damage (£) I'm looking at?

Id get somebody to scan the car for faults to see what it is first
